How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Stay in Mong Kok or Yau Ma Tei, one or two MTR stops from Tsim Sha Tsui, for rates 25–35% lower.
  • Choose Ocean Park over Disneyland if your children are older; the ticket is cheaper and the rides are bigger.
  • Eat at cha chaan teng cafes and dim sum spots, where a filling meal costs HK$50–80 (₹570–900).
  • Use the Star Ferry and trams instead of taxis; both cost under ₹100 a ride.
  • Avoid Chinese New Year, Christmas week and the Hong Kong Sevens weekend, when hotel rates jump.
  • Do the Pre-Arrival Registration yourself on the Immigration Department website; it's free.

How much does a Hong Kong trip cost from India?

A 4-night Hong Kong trip costs about ₹62,000–92,000 per person from India, twin sharing, including return flights. The budget figure assumes a 3-star hotel in Mong Kok, the Peak Tram and the Ngong Ping cable car; the mid-range figure adds a 4-star hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, transfers, meals and a Disneyland or Ocean Park ticket. Luxury trips with harbour-view rooms start around ₹1.8 lakh.

Hotels are Hong Kong's biggest cost; rooms are small and expensive by Asian standards. Everything else is reasonable. The MTR is cheap and efficient, the Star Ferry costs under ₹100, and many of the best sights, from the harbour light show to the Big Buddha, are free.

Entry costs

Indian passport holders don't pay a visa fee for stays of up to 14 days. Instead you complete the free online Pre-Arrival Registration before flying; it's valid for six months and covers multiple visits. Beware of websites that charge for it. Our Hong Kong visa guide explains the process.

Daily spending

Budget ₹3,500–5,500 per person per day, excluding hotel and theme parks, for meals, the MTR and small sights. A local cafe meal costs HK$50–80 (₹570–900); a vegetarian Indian dinner in Tsim Sha Tsui HK$120–200 (₹1,350–2,250). Load HK$200–300 on an Octopus card for transport and convenience stores. Cards work widely, and a multi-currency forex card saves on mark-ups; see our foreign exchange service.

TCS is added to overseas tour packages booked in India. It isn't an extra cost, as you claim it back against your income tax.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Hong Kong trip cost for a couple from India?
A 4-night mid-range Hong Kong trip for a couple costs about ₹1.85–2.1 lakh in total from Delhi or Mumbai, including flights, a 4-star Tsim Sha Tsui hotel, transfers, the Peak Tram, Ngong Ping 360, meals and one theme park. A budget version in Mong Kok without a theme park costs about ₹1.25–1.4 lakh for two.
Is Hong Kong cheaper than Singapore?
They're similar overall. Hong Kong's hotels are as expensive as Singapore's, sometimes more for the room size, but Indians pay no visa fee for Hong Kong and many sights are free. Singapore has more paid family attractions. A 4-night trip with flights starts around ₹62,000 per person for Hong Kong and ₹58,000 for Singapore.
How much Hong Kong dollar cash should I carry?
Carry about HK$1,000–1,500 (₹11,000–17,000) per person in cash for four days, plus a forex card. Load part of it onto an Octopus card for the MTR, buses, ferries and convenience stores. Markets and small eateries prefer cash; hotels, malls and attractions take cards. Licensed changers in Tsim Sha Tsui usually beat airport rates.
Can I add Macau to a Hong Kong trip cheaply?
Yes. The shuttle bus across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge costs about HK$65–70 (₹750) each way and takes about 45 minutes, and Indian passport holders can visit Macau visa-free. A day trip with local buses and a simple lunch costs ₹2,500–4,000 per person. Macau hotels are often cheaper than Hong Kong's midweek.
