Quick answer
October opens India's main travel season: the monsoon has withdrawn from most of the country, Himalayan skies are clear, and festival holidays drive demand. In India, pick Sikkim for clear Kanchenjunga views, Rajasthan as the heat breaks, or Mysuru for Dasara. Abroad, choose Nepal for the best trekking month, Japan for mild autumn days, or Jordan as the desert heat eases.

The rain is over and the hills are still green, with clear days for Shillong, Cherrapunji and the Mawlynnong–Dawki side. It is one of the best months for the Nongriat root-bridge trek.

How do Navratri, Puja and Diwali shape October travel?
October is festival season, and that shapes prices more than the weather does. Navratri, Durga Puja and Dussehra usually fall in late September or October, and many states give schools a week or more off around them; West Bengal's Puja holidays are the longest. Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October adds a holiday early in the month. In 2027, Diwali is expected in late October, which would make the last week of the month one of the most expensive of the year.
Book festival-week travel eight to ten weeks ahead. Kolkata travellers fill Sikkim, Darjeeling, Puri and the Andamans during the Puja week, Gujarati families head for Rajasthan, Goa and Dubai, and fares on almost every domestic route jump in Diwali week. See our festivals hub for what each celebration looks like on the ground.
Outside those weeks, October is good value. The weather is turning in your favour almost everywhere, and hotels have not yet moved to winter rates.
Where is the weather best in October?
The monsoon has withdrawn from most of India by mid-October, going by IMD's normal dates. The Himalaya has its clearest skies of the year, from Sikkim to Uttarakhand; see the best time to visit Sikkim. Rajasthan cools through the month, and Meghalaya and the north-east are green and dry.
Abroad, Nepal, Bhutan, Japan, Jordan, Egypt and northern Vietnam are at or near their best; Nepal trip cost covers a trekking budget. Dubai becomes comfortable by late October, and Dubai trip cost shows what Diwali week does to prices.
Where should you avoid in October?
- Ladakh and Spiti after mid-October: Nights fall below −5°C, many hotels and camps close, and the Manali–Leh road can close with the first snow.
- Chennai, Puducherry and coastal Tamil Nadu late in the month: The north-east monsoon usually sets in around 20 October, bringing heavy rain and cyclone risk.
- Central Vietnam: Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang see their heaviest rain and frequent floods in October and November.
- Delhi and the NCR from late October: Air quality worsens sharply as crop-burning smoke and winter inversions set in.
- Goa in early October: The season starts slowly, and some shacks and water sports open only from mid-month.
