How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • If you have time, go overland via Gorakhpur and the Sunauli border instead of flying.
  • Drive one way to Pokhara via Manakamana and fly back — you pay for only one domestic flight.
  • Show Indian ID at ticket counters; SAARC entry fees are a fraction of the rate for other foreigners.
  • Eat dal bhat at local restaurants — unlimited refills for NPR 300–600 (₹190–375).
  • Book Pokhara hotels early for Dashain, Tihar and May–June, when Indian demand peaks.
  • Travel in February or early December for clear skies at lower hotel rates.
  • Pay in Indian or Nepali rupees rather than US dollars, and carry ₹100 notes for small purchases.

How much does a Nepal trip cost from India?

Nepal is the most affordable international trip for most Indian travellers. Flights from Delhi take about 1 hour 40 minutes, there is no visa, Indian rupees are accepted, and heritage sites charge SAARC rates. A 5-night Kathmandu–Pokhara trip with 4★ hotels and a private car costs most families ₹45,000–60,000 per person with flights.

Flights and getting around

Direct flights connect Kathmandu with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Varanasi, among others. Inside Nepal, the main decision is how to reach Pokhara:

OptionTimeCost per person, one way
Flight25 minutes₹4,500–8,000
Private car (shared by two)6–8 hours₹3,500–5,500
Tourist bus7–8 hours₹600–1,200

Many travellers drive one way via the Manakamana cable car and fly back.

Hotels and food

4★ hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara cost about ₹5,500–9,000 a night for a double room with breakfast; heritage luxury hotels cost far more. Vegetarian food is everywhere and cheap: a dal bhat set costs NPR 300–600 (₹190–375) and a plate of veg momos NPR 150–300 (₹95–190). Indian restaurants in Thamel and Pokhara serve North and South Indian meals.

Money: rupees, notes and TCS

Indian rupees are accepted widely at ₹1 = NPR 1.6, and ₹100 notes are never a problem. After a 2026 Nepal Rastra Bank notice, Indian and Nepali nationals may carry ₹200 and ₹500 notes up to ₹25,000 per person; notes issued before November 2016 remain banned. UPI works at many larger shops and restaurants. TCS applies to overseas tour packages booked in India, Nepal included, and can be adjusted against your income tax.

What else to budget

  • Everest mountain flight: ₹12,000–20,000 per person.
  • Paragliding in Pokhara: ₹5,000–8,000.
  • Muktinath add-on with flights to Jomsom and a jeep: ₹20,000–35,000 per person for two extra nights.
  • Tips for your driver and guide: NPR 500–1,000 (₹310–625) a day is customary.

Plan with the 6-day Nepal itinerary, choose a base in where to stay in Kathmandu, and check the best time to visit Nepal. ID rules are in the Nepal visa guide, and travel insurance is worth having for mountain flights and road travel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to visit Nepal from India?
Travel overland: take a train or bus to Gorakhpur, cross at Sunauli into Bhairahawa, and continue to Pokhara and Kathmandu by tourist bus. With 3★ hotels, five nights can cost under ₹20,000 per person. Flying from Delhi or Kolkata and using tourist buses inside Nepal costs around ₹28,000.
Do Indians need a passport for Nepal?
No. Indian citizens can enter Nepal with either a valid passport or a voter ID card issued by the Election Commission. Airlines check ID strictly at boarding. Rules for children and senior citizens allow some other documents, so check the current list in the Nepal visa guide before you fly.
How much does a Nepal trip cost for a family of four?
For five nights in 4★ hotels with a private car, one Pokhara flight and flights from Delhi, a family of four typically spends ₹1.7–2.1 lakh in total. Young children often stay free in their parents' room, and sharing one car between four brings the per-person cost down noticeably.
Is the Everest mountain flight expensive for Indians?
It costs roughly ₹12,000–20,000 per person, depending on the airline and whether an Indian-national fare is offered. That is more than most single activities in Nepal, but it is the only way to see Everest without trekking. Book it early in your trip so a weather cancellation can be rescheduled.
