When is the best time to visit Gujarat?

November to February. That is when the three big draws line up: the White Rann in Kutch is dry and walkable, Gir National Park is open for lion safaris, and Ahmedabad and the Statue of Unity are comfortable at 27–32 °C. The table uses Ahmedabad; Kutch has hotter afternoons in October and March and colder nights in January, when the Rann can fall to 5–8 °C after dark.

The three timing rules

  1. Rann of Kutch: go between November and February. The salt flat floods in the monsoon and only dries into a hard white crust by November. Rann Utsav's Tent City at Dhordo is scheduled from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, and full-moon nights (around 24 November, 24 December, 22 January and 20 February) are the most popular.
  2. Gir: the national park is closed from 16 June to 15 October. December to March is the most comfortable; April and May are hot, but sightings near water points are good.
  3. Festivals: Navratri (September–October) and Uttarayan (14 January) are worth planning around, but book early.

Months to avoid

April to June is very hot, with Ahmedabad and Kutch touching 44 °C. The monsoon, late June to September, floods the Rann and closes Gir, though Saputara, Polo Forest and Champaner are green. Diwali week is a different problem: it is Gujarat's longest holiday, and Kutch, Somnath, Dwarka and Gir fill with domestic travellers. In 2026 that is roughly 8–12 November.

Gujarat is a dry state. Visitors from outside can apply for a temporary liquor permit at licensed hotel shops with ID, but most travellers simply plan around it.

Frequently asked questions

When is Rann Utsav 2026–27?
The Tent City at Dhordo is scheduled to run from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, according to announcements at the time of review. Some third-party sites list slightly different end dates, so confirm on the official Rann Utsav booking site before paying. Full-moon weekends and the Christmas-New Year period sell out first.
Is Gir National Park open in the monsoon?
No. Gir's safari routes close every year from 16 June to 15 October for the breeding season and because the forest tracks become impassable. The Devalia Safari Park, also called the Gir Interpretation Zone, usually stays open, but sightings there are within a fenced area. Plan a proper Gir safari between mid-October and mid-June.
Can you see the White Rann in October?
Only sometimes. After a heavy monsoon, parts of the Rann stay wet or marshy into November, and the salt crust can look grey rather than white. Mid-November to February is safer. If you are travelling in early November, ask your hotel in Bhuj about conditions near Dhordo before you drive out.
What is the best month for a family trip to Gujarat?
December and January suit families best: school holidays line up, days are 27–30 °C, and the Rann, Gir and the Statue of Unity are all open. January adds Uttarayan kite flying on 14 January. Avoid Diwali week unless your bookings are confirmed, as Gujarat's own holiday crowds fill hotels across Saurashtra and Kutch.
