White salt desert at Rann of Kutch

Lions, white desert and stepwells

Gujarat Tour Packages

Gujarat holds the only wild Asiatic lions on earth, a salt desert that turns white under a full moon, and stepwells whose engineering is centuries ahead of their time — yet it sees a fraction of the visitors of neighbouring Rajasthan.

Why travellers choose Gujarat

Gir is the last home of the Asiatic lion, and a safari there is a genuinely different experience from India's tiger reserves.

The Rann of Kutch under a full moon during the Rann Utsav is one of India's most striking landscapes — an endless white salt flat meeting the horizon.

Rani ki Vav at Patan and Adalaj's stepwell are among the most beautiful structures in the country, and both are astonishingly uncrowded.

What not to miss in Gujarat

  • Gir National Park — The world's only wild Asiatic lion population, with jeep safaris in the sanctuary zone.
  • Rann of Kutch — The white salt desert, best on a full-moon night during the winter Rann Utsav.
  • Statue of Unity — The world's tallest statue, with a viewing gallery at chest height and a valley of flowers below.
  • Rani ki Vav, Patan — A UNESCO-listed stepwell of extraordinary sculptural detail.
  • Somnath and Dwarka — Two of the most significant temples in western India, on the Saurashtra coast.
  • Ahmedabad old city — A UNESCO World Heritage City, with pols, Sabarmati Ashram and the Adalaj stepwell nearby.

When to travel

October to March is the season across the state. The Rann Utsav runs through the winter months and is when Kutch is at its best. Gir closes during the monsoon, typically from mid-June to mid-October. April to June is very hot, though lion sightings improve as animals gather at water.

Entry and paperwork

No visa is needed for Indian citizens. Gir safari permits are limited and must be booked well in advance online — we handle this. Gujarat is a dry state; alcohol is prohibited, and permits for visitors are available under specific conditions which we can explain.

Good to know

Gujarat — frequently asked questions

Will I see a lion at Gir?
Sighting rates are high, particularly on early morning safaris in the sanctuary zone. Two safaris rather than one makes it close to certain.
When should I visit the Rann?
During the winter Rann Utsav, and ideally on or near a full moon — the salt flat under moonlight is the whole point.
Is Gujarat really dry?
Yes, alcohol is prohibited statewide. Visitor permits exist under certain conditions, and we can advise on the current process.
