Quick answer

The best time to visit Sikkim is March to May and October to mid-December. Spring brings rhododendrons in Yumthang and clear roads; autumn brings the sharpest Kanchenjunga views. Winter (December–February) is cold, and snow can close Nathula and North Sikkim for days. Avoid June to September, when monsoon landslides cut roads to Gangtok and the north.

When is the best time to visit Sikkim?

March to May and October to mid-December. The monthly figures are for Gangtok at about 1,650 m. Lachung, Tsomgo and Nathula are much colder: Tsomgo is around 3,750 m and Nathula about 4,310 m, so add a warm layer whatever the month.

CrowdsHigh in MayHigh in October Puja week

Pick spring for the rhododendrons of Yumthang Valley. Pick late October to November if mountain views matter most: this is the clearest weather of the year.

Can you visit Sikkim in winter?

Yes. Gangtok stays at 4–14°C and is quiet, and you may see snow at Tsomgo. The catch is that Nathula and the road to Zero Point can shut for days after snowfall, and the army may stop vehicles beyond a point. Build in flexibility and don't promise children snow at Nathula.

Why skip the monsoon?

Gangtok gets 550–650 mm of rain a month from June to August. NH10 from Siliguri, the only main road in, is prone to landslides, and North Sikkim permits are often suspended. Lachen and the Gurudongmar route have been open on and off since the October 2023 Teesta flood. Check status a week before travel.

Nathula, Tsomgo and North Sikkim permits

Nathula is for Indian nationals only and is usually open Wednesday to Sunday. Permits for Nathula, Tsomgo and North Sikkim are issued through registered tour operators. Carry ID and passport photos. Hotels also collect a ₹50 per person Sikkim tourism fee at check-in.

Darjeeling pairs well with Sikkim in the same windows. See the best time to visit Darjeeling.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for snow in Sikkim?
December to February gives the best chance of snow at Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and Zero Point. Snow can also close those roads for days. March and early April often still have snow patches at Zero Point with better road access, which suits families who want to see snow without too much risk.
Is October a good time to visit Sikkim?
Yes. October is one of the best months: the monsoon has cleared, Kanchenjunga is visible most mornings and roads are open. The Durga Puja week brings big crowds from West Bengal, so book hotels and permits early for those dates.
Is Nathula open in winter?
Nathula usually stays open on its regular days (Wednesday to Sunday) in winter, but snow often closes it for days at a time. When that happens, operators usually still take you to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir if the road is open that far. Keep a spare day in Gangtok.
Can I visit North Sikkim in the monsoon?
It is not advisable. From June to September landslides often close the North Sikkim Highway, and permits are suspended for days. Lachen and the Gurudongmar route have been especially unreliable since the 2023 Teesta flood. Plan Lachung and Yumthang for March–May or October–December instead.
