How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Travel between January and June, when the Maasai Mara fee is about half the July–December rate and many lodges offer lower rates.
  • Share a private vehicle with another family; a Land Cruiser seats six and the daily cost is fixed.
  • Drive into the Mara rather than flying; it adds a long day but saves ₹35,000–55,000 per person.
  • Choose a camp just outside the reserve gates near Talek or Sekenani rather than one deep inside or in a private conservancy.
  • Fly non-stop from Mumbai, which is usually the cheapest gateway from India.
  • Book four to six months ahead for Diwali, Christmas and August, when good-value camps sell out first.

How much does a Kenya safari cost from India?

A 5-night Kenya safari costs about ₹1,30,000 per person on a budget (January to June), ₹2,10,000 at mid-range in migration season and ₹4,50,000 and up for luxury fly-in camps, including return flights from Mumbai or Delhi, twin sharing.

Unlike most international trips, flights are the smaller part of the bill. Park fees, lodge rates and the safari vehicle make up most of it.

Park fees: the biggest swing factor

At the time of review, the Maasai Mara National Reserve charges non-resident adults about USD 200 per day from July to December and USD 100 per day from January to June. For three Mara days that is roughly ₹52,800 per adult in peak season against ₹26,400 in the low season. Parks run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, such as Amboseli and Nakuru, typically charge less. Fees are normally included in your package.

Lodges and camps

  • Budget camps: USD 80–150 per person per night, full board
  • Mid-range tented camps and lodges: USD 200–400 per person per night, full board
  • Luxury conservancy camps: USD 700–1,500 per person per night, all-inclusive

Peak rates apply from July to October and over Christmas.

Vehicle: shared or private?

A private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a driver-guide costs about USD 250–300 a day including fuel. Split four ways it is good value; for a couple, the vehicle cost per head nearly doubles. Budget safaris use shared minivans, which are cheaper but cramped on rough roads.

Flights and entry costs

Mumbai has non-stop flights to Nairobi, about six hours, with Kenya Airways, Air India and IndiGo at the time of review. Other cities connect via Mumbai or the Gulf. You also need a Kenya eTA, about USD 30–35 with charges, and a yellow fever certificate for your return to India. See our Kenya visa guide.

If you buy the safari as a package from an Indian operator, TCS is collected on the package value; you claim it back when you file your income tax return.

The balloon safari, about USD 450–550, is the add-on that most often surprises budgets. Decide before you book, as August flights sell out.

Paying on the ground

US dollars are widely accepted at lodges; carry clean, recent notes, as old or torn ones are often refused, and small denominations for tips. See our forex service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Kenya safari cost for a couple from India?
For two people, a 5-night mid-range safari in migration season costs about ₹4.2–5 lakh in total, including flights from Mumbai, a private 4x4, full-board lodges and park fees. Travelling between January and June, or sharing a vehicle with another couple, can bring that down by ₹60,000–1,00,000.
Are park fees included in Kenya safari packages?
Usually, but check the quote line by line. Some low-priced quotes exclude the Maasai Mara fee or list it separately as a conservation fee, which can add ₹26,000–53,000 per adult for three days. A clear quote states the number of park days and the fee rate assumed.
Is Kenya cheaper than Tanzania for a safari?
For a short first safari, Kenya is usually a little cheaper. Mumbai has non-stop flights to Nairobi, the Maasai Mara is reachable by road, and drive-in packages are common. Tanzania's northern circuit often needs more internal flights or long drives. Tanzania is better for the January–March calving season.
How much should I budget for tips on a Kenya safari?
Plan on about USD 10–20 per day per group for your driver-guide, and a similar amount per day for the shared staff box at each lodge. For a family on a six-day trip, tips typically total ₹10,000–18,000. Tip at the end, in US dollars or Kenyan shillings.
Is the hot-air balloon safari worth the price?
For many travellers it is the highlight: an hour over the Mara at sunrise with a bush breakfast. At about ₹40,000–48,000 per person, though, it can cost as much as two lodge nights. If budget is tight, an extra full day of game drives usually gives more sightings.
