How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Travel in June, early November or early December, when lodges charge shoulder-season rates but the weather is usually workable.
  • Travel as a group of four to six so the vehicle and crater fees are split more ways.
  • Stay in Karatu rather than on the Ngorongoro rim; it is 30–40 minutes from the crater gate and noticeably cheaper.
  • Skip the balloon flight if the budget is tight and add an extra Serengeti day instead.
  • If you add Zanzibar, fly home from Zanzibar rather than returning to Kilimanjaro.
  • Carry clean US dollar notes printed after 2013 for tips and extras; older notes are often refused.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost from India?

For a 6-night northern-circuit safari, plan on about ₹2,75,000 per person for a mid-range trip, twin sharing, including return flights from Delhi or Mumbai, the e-visa and all park fees. A budget safari starts around ₹1,70,000, and luxury tented camps from about ₹6,50,000.

The estimate follows our 7-day Tanzania itinerary: Arusha, Tarangire, two nights in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

Why are safaris so expensive?

Tanzania's government fees are high by design, to fund conservation and limit numbers. On a 6-night trip, park, crater and concession fees alone come to about USD 650–750 (₹55,000–65,000) per person:

FeeTypical rate
Serengeti entry, adult per dayAbout USD 83 (₹7,300)
Serengeti overnight concession, per nightAbout USD 60–70 (₹5,300–6,200)
Ngorongoro conservation fee, per dayAbout USD 71 (₹6,200)
Ngorongoro crater service fee, per vehicleUSD 295 (₹26,000)
Tarangire or Lake Manyara entry, per dayAbout USD 50–59 (₹4,400–5,200)

On top of fees, you pay for a 4x4, a driver-guide and lodges in remote places where every supply arrives by road.

What changes the price most?

  • Season: July to September is the most expensive; April and May are the cheapest but wettest.
  • Group size: the vehicle and crater fee are per vehicle, so four to six people sharing pay much less each than a couple.
  • Where you sleep: lodges inside the Serengeti cost more but save hours of driving.
  • Zanzibar: three nights add roughly ₹45,000–80,000 per person including the flight.

Visa, insurance and forex

Indians need a Tanzania e-visa, about USD 50, applied online before travel; see our Tanzania visa guide. Zanzibar requires a separate mandatory inbound insurance policy for visitors, and Tanzania has published rules for a similar policy on the mainland; check current requirements before you fly.

Carry US dollars for tips and extras on a forex card plus clean cash notes; our foreign exchange team can help. Buy travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. TCS on overseas packages is 2% from April 2026, adjustable against income tax.

Mara River crossings (July to September) push northern-camp prices to their peak. See the best time to visit Tanzania.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Tanzania safari cost per person from India?
A mid-range 6-night safari covering Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro costs from about ₹2,75,000 per person, twin sharing, including return flights, lodges with full board, a private vehicle shared by four, park fees and the e-visa. Budget camping-style safaris start around ₹1,70,000, and luxury tented camps from about ₹6,50,000.
Is a Tanzania safari more expensive than Kenya?
Usually a little, because Tanzania's park and crater fees are higher and distances between parks are longer. Kenya's Maasai Mara is closer to Nairobi, so a short safari costs less. Tanzania gives you more variety, with the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar, which many Indian travellers feel justifies the difference.
How much should I tip on a Tanzania safari?
A common guideline is USD 20–30 per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, shared among the group, plus USD 5–10 per guest per day for the lodge staff tip box. For a 5-day safari with four people, that works out to about USD 60–100 each. Carry clean US dollar notes for tips.
Do I need yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania?
Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from, or transit for more than 12 hours through, a country with yellow fever risk, such as Kenya or Ethiopia. Indian health authorities may also check it on return from parts of Africa. Get the vaccine at least ten days before travel and carry the certificate.
