Quick answer

Indian passport holders need a visa for Tanzania. Apply for the ordinary single-entry e-visa on the official immigration portal for USD 50, allowing up to about two weeks for processing; it lets you stay up to 90 days. Visa on arrival is also available at the main airports. Carry a yellow fever certificate, and buy Zanzibar's mandatory insurance if visiting the islands.

  • Passport bio-page scan and a recent digital photo
  • Return ticket
  • Hotel or safari lodge bookings, or the tour operator's itinerary
  • Yellow fever certificate (needed if arriving via Kenya or another endemic country, and checked by India on your return)
  • Zanzibar visitors: Zanzibar's mandatory inbound travel insurance, bought online before arrival
  • Card for online payment

Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • India requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers returning from Tanzania; without it you can be quarantined on landing.
  • Zanzibar charges its own mandatory inbound insurance, about USD 44 per person at the time of review, on top of any Indian policy.
  • The e-visa portal has had outages; apply early and keep your reference number instead of resubmitting.
  • Sites with names like evisa-tanzania are private agents, not the government portal.

Do Indians need a visa for Tanzania?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa, and the cleanest route is the official Tanzanian e-visa: an ordinary single-entry tourist visa for USD 50, roughly ₹4,400, allowing a stay of up to 90 days. Visa on arrival is also available at the main airports, but the e-visa saves you a queue after a long flight.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Use only the official immigration e-visa portal. Sites with names like "evisa-tanzania" are private agents.
  2. Choose the ordinary visa and upload a passport bio-page scan, a recent photo and your return ticket.
  3. Add your first hotel or the safari operator's itinerary.
  4. Pay USD 50 by card.
  5. Processing can take up to about ten working days, and the portal has had outages. Apply at least three weeks ahead and keep your application reference.
  6. Print the grant notice and carry it with your passport.

What immigration actually checks

At Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, officers check the visa, passport validity (six months, two blank pages) and sometimes your return ticket. If you are arriving from Kenya, or transiting Nairobi for more than 12 hours, Tanzania can ask for a yellow fever certificate.

Yellow fever and Zanzibar insurance

  • India requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers returning from Tanzania. Without it you can be quarantined on landing. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure at an authorised centre.
  • Zanzibar charges its own mandatory inbound travel insurance, about USD 44 per person at the time of review, bought online before arrival. Your Indian policy does not replace it.

Combining with Kenya

Many safaris pair the Serengeti with the Maasai Mara. Kenya needs its own eTA for Indians, and both authorisations are single entry, so plan to cross the border only once.

Tips for families and seniors

  • Every traveller, including children, needs their own visa.
  • The Ngorongoro Crater rim sits above 2,200 m and gets cold at night; pack layers even in July.
  • Long Serengeti road transfers are tiring. Flying between airstrips saves a day of driving for older travellers.
  • Kilimanjaro climbs need fitness, a licensed operator and insurance that covers high-altitude trekking.
  • Lodges handle vegetarian meals well if you tell them in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians get visa on arrival in Tanzania?
Yes, visa on arrival is available to Indian passport holders at the main airports, paid in US dollars. Applying for the e-visa in advance is still the better option, because arrival queues at Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar can be long and payment systems are not always reliable.
How much is the Tanzania visa for Indians?
The ordinary single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50, roughly ₹4,400, whether you apply online or on arrival. Pay only on the official immigration portal; private sites charge more for the same visa.
Do I need Zanzibar insurance if I already have travel insurance?
Yes. Zanzibar requires its own inbound travel insurance, about USD 44 per person at the time of review, bought online before arrival. It applies on top of any policy you buy in India, so budget for it separately.
Is yellow fever vaccination required for Tanzania?
Tanzania may ask for it if you arrive from or transit a yellow fever country such as Kenya. India requires it when you return from Tanzania. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel at an authorised centre and carry the certificate.
How long does the Tanzania e-visa take?
Allow up to about ten working days. The portal has had outages, so apply at least three weeks before travel, keep your reference number, and check the status page rather than resubmitting.
