Quick answer

How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Book an open-jaw ticket into Cape Town and out of Johannesburg so you need only one domestic flight.
- Travel from May to August: Cape Town is in its cheaper winter season, and Kruger has its best game viewing.
- Book SANParks rest camps early; they open bookings about 11 months ahead and the best camps fill fast.
- Self-drive in Cape Town and on the Panorama Route; car hire is affordable and traffic keeps left, as in India.
- Avoid mid-December to mid-January, when South African school holidays push up rates.
- Pay in rand, not rupees, when a card machine asks; the conversion is always worse.
How much does a South Africa trip cost from India?
A 9-night South Africa trip covering Cape Town, Kruger and Johannesburg costs about ₹1,45,000 per person on a budget, ₹2,10,000 at mid-range and ₹4,20,000 and up for luxury, including return economy flights from Indian metros, twin sharing.
The rand is weak against the rupee, about ₹4.9 per rand, so hotels, food and fuel feel reasonable by international standards. The expensive parts are flights, the domestic flight to Kruger and safari lodges.
Flights from India
There are no non-stop flights from India at the time of review. One-stop routes via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Mauritius take 13–18 hours. Expect ₹52,000–95,000 return in economy, highest in December. Flying into Cape Town and out of Johannesburg usually costs little more than a return ticket.
Safari: the biggest choice
| Kruger option | Per person per night, twin share |
|---|---|
| SANParks rest camp, self-drive | ₹3,000–6,000, room only |
| Lodge outside the park, with drives | ₹10,000–18,000 |
| Private reserve lodge, all-inclusive | ₹20,000–45,000 |
| Top luxury lodge in the Sabi Sand | ₹60,000 and up |
Kruger's conservation fee for international visitors is about ZAR 690 (roughly ₹3,400) per adult per day from November 2026. Private lodges usually include their reserve's fees.
Visa and entry
Indian passport holders need a visa or an electronic travel authorisation for South Africa. At the time of review there is no government visa fee for Indian citizens, though service charges apply if you apply through the visa centre. Rules have been changing, so check our South Africa visa guide before you book. If your route includes more than 12 hours in transit in Kenya or Ethiopia, carry a yellow fever certificate.
Getting around
A compact hire car costs about ₹2,500–4,500 a day, roads are good and traffic keeps left. Many families prefer a driver-guide for the long Kruger to Johannesburg leg.
If you buy a package from an Indian operator, TCS is collected on the package value; you claim it back when you file your income tax return. Load rand or US dollars on a forex card through our forex service.
South Africa's school holidays, mid-December to mid-January and around Easter, push up Cape Town and Kruger rates. Indian summer holidays fall in the cheaper South African winter.
