When is the best time to visit South Africa?

South Africa sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons run opposite to India's. Most first trips combine Cape Town (wet winters, dry summers) with a Kruger safari (wet summers, dry winters), and the two want different things. The months that suit both best are September to November and March to April.

In spring, Cape Town warms to 20–24°C, southern right whales are in Walker Bay off Hermanus, and Kruger is at the end of its dry season, with thin bush and animals gathered at waterholes. In autumn, the Cape has calm, warm days and the Winelands are harvesting, while Kruger is green but drying out.

Is June or July a good time to visit?

It depends on what you are coming for. May to August is Kruger's best game-viewing season: dry, cooler (about 23–26°C by day, 5–8°C at dawn) and with fewer mosquitoes. Cape Town, though, gets most of its rain then, with highs around 18°C and cold fronts that can close the Table Mountain cableway for a day or two. In Indian summer holidays, give Kruger more nights and keep Cape Town days flexible.

What about December and January?

This is South African summer and local holiday season. Cape Town is at its best for beaches and long evenings, with sunset after 7.30 pm, but hotel rates peak and the V&A Waterfront is crowded. Kruger is hot (often 32°C or more), humid and green, and thick bush makes spotting harder.

Kruger is a malaria area. The risk is low but real, especially from October to April, so ask your doctor about prophylaxis and pack a DEET repellent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Cape Town?
March and April, and October to early December, give the best mix of warm, dry weather and manageable crowds in Cape Town. January and February are warmest and driest but busiest. June to August is the wettest period, with highs near 18°C and occasional cableway closures because of wind.
When is the best time for a Kruger safari?
May to October is the dry season, when the bush thins out and animals gather at rivers and waterholes, making them easier to spot. September and October are the driest months. November to March is green and hot, with newborn animals and good birdlife, but thicker vegetation and higher malaria risk.
When can you see whales in South Africa?
Southern right whales visit the Western Cape coast from about June or July to November, with the best sightings in September and October. Hermanus, roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive from Cape Town, is the easiest base, and you can often see whales from the cliff path without taking a boat.
Is South Africa good to visit during Diwali?
Yes. October and November are spring, with Cape Town around 22–24°C and Kruger at the end of its dry season, one of the best weather combinations for a two-region trip. Kruger can be very hot by late October, so plan game drives for early morning and late afternoon.
Is South Africa cold in June?
Cape Town has a cool, wet winter in June, with highs near 19°C and lows near 8°C. Johannesburg and Kruger are dry and sunny by day but cold at dawn, sometimes close to freezing on the highveld. Pack layers, a warm jacket for open-vehicle game drives and a rain shell.
