Quick answer

For a first trip, stay in Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches on the north coast — calm lagoons, plenty of restaurants and easy access to day tours. Choose Flic en Flac for sunsets and value, Belle Mare on the east coast for long beaches and resort honeymoons, Le Morne for luxury and kitesurfing, and Blue Bay for snorkelling near the airport.

The best areas to stay in Mauritius

Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches and Pereybère (north)

₹₹

Best for: First-timers, families, groups who want restaurants and nightlife

Calm lagoon beaches, the island's widest choice of restaurants — Indian included — plus supermarkets and tour operators. Port Louis and Pamplemousses are 30–45 minutes away.

Busier and more built-up than other coasts; Grand Baie's own beach is small, so Trou aux Biches or Pereybère have better sand.

Doubles from ₹7,000 a night

Flic en Flac and Wolmar (west)

₹

Best for: Value, sunsets, families who want a long beach

One of the longest public beaches on the island, sheltered and sunny in the winter months, with apartments and mid-range hotels close to Casela and the Tamarin dolphins.

Weekend crowds of local families on the public beach, and a 60–75 minute transfer from the airport.

Doubles from ₹6,500 a night

Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce (east)

₹₹₹

Best for: Honeymooners, resort holidays, golfers

Long white beaches backed by large 4★ and 5★ resorts, and the departure point for Île aux Cerfs. Calmer seas than the south in the summer months.

Windy from June to August, few restaurants outside the resorts, and long drives to Port Louis and the south-west.

Doubles from ₹20,000 a night

Le Morne and the south-west

₹₹₹

Best for: Luxury stays, kitesurfing, sunsets under the mountain

A UNESCO-listed mountain rises behind a long, quiet beach lined with 5★ resorts. Chamarel, Black River Gorges and the Tamarin dolphins are close by.

Remote, with almost no restaurants outside the resorts, and an hour or more from Port Louis and the north.

Doubles from ₹22,000 a night

Blue Bay and Mahébourg (south-east)

₹

Best for: Snorkelling, short stays near the airport, budget travellers

Blue Bay Marine Park has some of the best snorkelling from the shore, and the old fishing town of Mahébourg has a waterfront market and inexpensive guesthouses. The airport is about 15 minutes away.

Fewer big resorts and little nightlife; quiet after dark and windy in winter.

Doubles from ₹6,000 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Which coast should you choose?

Mauritius is ringed by lagoons, and each coast has its own character and season. In the May–November winter, the north and west are sunnier and sheltered from the trade winds; in the December–April summer, the east is calmer and pleasantly breezy. The island is small enough to reach most sights from any base, but the wrong coast can mean 90 minutes each way to a day tour.

CoastBest monthsFeel
North (Grand Baie)All year, best May–NovemberLively, practical
West (Flic en Flac)May–NovemberSunsets, value
East (Belle Mare)October–AprilResort-focused, long beaches
South-west (Le Morne)All yearRemote, luxurious
South-east (Blue Bay)October–MayQuiet, snorkelling

Should you split your stay?

On a six-night trip, families usually stay in one place on the north coast. Honeymooners often split: three nights on the north coast for tours and restaurants, then three at a resort in Belle Mare or Le Morne to unwind. Moving costs about ₹2,500–4,000 for a private transfer and half a day.

What Indian travellers look for

Most 4★ resorts have Indian vegetarian dishes and can arrange Jain meals with notice, and the north coast has the most Indian restaurants. If you are travelling with parents, check for ground-floor rooms and short walks to the beach — some large east-coast resorts are spread out.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Mauritius is best for families?
The north coast — Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy and Pereybère — suits most families, with calm, shallow lagoons, plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, and short drives to Port Louis and tour pick-up points. Flic en Flac on the west coast is a good-value alternative with a long, sheltered beach.
Where should honeymooners stay in Mauritius?
Belle Mare on the east coast and Le Morne in the south-west have the quietest 5★ beach resorts. A common plan is three nights on the north coast for sightseeing and three on the east or south-west coast to relax. From June to August, prefer Le Morne or the north, as the east coast gets windy.
Is Port Louis a good place to stay?
Not for a holiday. Port Louis is the capital and business centre, with heavy traffic and no beach, and it goes quiet after office hours. Visit on a day tour for Aapravasi Ghat, the Central Market and the Caudan Waterfront, and stay on the coast instead.
