Quick answer

For a first trip of three or four nights, stay at a resort in North or South Malé Atoll, a short speedboat ride from the airport. Choose Ari or Baa Atoll for whale sharks, mantas and seaplane resorts if you have five nights or more. Local islands such as Maafushi suit budget travellers, and Hulhumalé works for a late-arrival night near the airport.

The best areas to stay in Maldives

North and South Malé Atolls (speedboat resorts)

₹₹₹

Best for: First visits, short trips, families with children and parents

Most resorts are 20–60 minutes by speedboat from the airport, so you can arrive on almost any flight and reach your villa the same day. Choice runs from 3★ to 5★, with good house reefs and family-friendly lagoons.

Being close to Malé, some resorts look across to other islands or the airport's lights; the most secluded resorts are further out.

Ari Atoll

₹₹₹

Best for: Whale sharks, diving, honeymoons of five nights or more

Home to the South Ari Marine Protected Area with year-round whale sharks, manta cleaning stations and some of the country's best diving. Seaplane resorts here feel remote and quiet.

Seaplane transfers add USD 500–900 per person, and late international arrivals mean an extra night near Malé.

Doubles from ₹30,000 a night

Baa, Raa and Lhaviyani Atolls

₹₹₹

Best for: Manta season, design-led luxury resorts, longer stays

Baa is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and Hanifaru Bay draws manta rays from roughly June to November. These northern atolls have many of the country's newer 5★ resorts.

Seaplane or domestic-flight transfers are expensive and weather-dependent — little reason to come this far for only three nights.

Doubles from ₹40,000 a night

Maafushi, Gulhi and Guraidhoo (local islands)

₹

Best for: Budget travellers, groups of friends, backpacking couples

Guesthouses and small hotels on inhabited islands in South Malé Atoll cost a fraction of a resort, with cheap excursions, local cafés and designated bikini beaches. Maafushi is about an hour from Malé by public speedboat.

No alcohol, modest dress away from the bikini beach, and Maafushi in particular is crowded with guesthouses and construction.

Doubles from ₹4,500 a night

Dhigurah, Thoddoo and Fulidhoo (quieter local islands)

₹

Best for: Budget travellers who want a calmer island and good snorkelling

Dhigurah in South Ari sits beside the whale shark zone with a long natural beach; Thoddoo is known for its farms; Fulidhoo is tiny and calm. Prices stay at guesthouse level.

Fewer boats and restaurants than Maafushi, and transfers can take one to two hours or need a domestic flight.

Doubles from ₹5,000 a night

Hulhumalé (near the airport)

₹

Best for: Late arrivals, early departures, a transit night

A planned town on reclaimed land, 10–15 minutes from the airport, with business hotels, a city beach and Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants. Useful before a morning seaplane.

Not a holiday base: no resort feel, no alcohol, and the beach is a city beach.

Doubles from ₹5,000 a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Resort island or local island?

This is the first decision, and it shapes the whole trip. A resort island is one hotel on its own island: private beach, alcohol, pools, a house reef, and prices in US dollars with taxes on top. A local island is an inhabited Maldivian island with guesthouses, schools and mosques: no alcohol and swimwear only on designated bikini beaches, but the same sea at a fraction of the price.

Which atoll should you choose?

For three or four nights, stay close: North or South Malé Atoll keeps transfers under an hour by speedboat. With five nights or more, a seaplane resort in Ari, Baa or Lhaviyani buys more seclusion and richer marine life, at USD 500–900 per person in transfers.

What Indian travellers should ask a resort

  • Vegetarian and Jain food: most resorts with many Indian guests have an Indian chef or menu; confirm by email before booking.
  • Children and parents: a shallow lagoon, a kids' club and beach villas beat water villas with ladders.
  • House reef: if you want to snorkel daily, pick a resort known for its house reef rather than a sandy lagoon.

Many travellers split the trip: two nights on a local island for excursions, then two at a resort. It cuts the cost without giving up the resort experience.

Plan your budget with the Maldives trip cost guide, follow the 4-day Maldives itinerary, and read the Maldives food guide for vegetarian options. Entry rules are in the Maldives visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best atoll in the Maldives for a honeymoon?
For four nights, a quiet resort in North or South Malé Atoll keeps transfers short. With five nights or more, Baa, Lhaviyani or Ari offers more seclusion and a seaplane arrival. Choose a resort with sunset-facing water villas and adults-focused areas rather than the one with the biggest kids' club.
Is it safe to stay on a local island in the Maldives?
Yes. Local islands are small, close-knit communities with little crime. Respect local customs: dress modestly away from the bikini beach, avoid public displays of affection, and remember that alcohol is not available. Women travellers generally feel comfortable, especially on islands with many guesthouses such as Maafushi.
Do I need a night in Malé or Hulhumalé?
Only if your flight lands after mid-afternoon and your resort needs a seaplane, which flies only in daylight, or if your flight home leaves very early. Speedboat resorts can usually collect you at most hours. Hulhumalé hotels are 10–15 minutes from the airport.
Are water villas worth it in the Maldives?
Water villas give direct lagoon access and privacy, and suit couples. They cost 30–60% more than beach villas and can be awkward with toddlers or parents who dislike ladders and open decks. Families usually do better in a beach villa; couples often book one water-villa night as a treat.
