Quick answer
Vegetarian food is easy at most Maldives resorts, which have Indian chefs or menus and handle Jain requests with notice. Local Maldivian cooking is built on tuna — many snacks and curries contain fish — so vegetarians need care on local islands. Roshi, dal, vegetable curries, bondibai and breadfruit chips are safe. Malé and Hulhumalé have several Indian restaurants.

What to order (and what to ask about)
Mas huni
Shredded smoked tuna with coconut, onion and chilli, eaten with roshi at breakfast. The national breakfast — and the reason to ask before ordering anything 'local'.
Garudhiya
Clear tuna broth served with rice, lime and chilli; the base of everyday Maldivian cooking.
Roshi
Thin wheat flatbread, very like a chapati. Plain roshi is vegetarian; just check what it is served with.
Bajiya
Samosa-like pastries usually filled with tuna and onion — a staple of the 'short eats' (hedhikaa) sold in cafés.
Gulha
Fried dough balls stuffed with smoked tuna and coconut; a teatime favourite.
Fihunu mas
Whole fish rubbed with chilli paste and grilled over coals, often served at resort barbecues.
Kulhi boakiba
Spicy baked fish cake made with tuna, rice flour and coconut; served at festivals and in cafés.
Bondibai
Coconut-milk rice pudding with cardamom and rose water — close to kheer.
Breadfruit chips
Thin fried slices of breadfruit, salted or spiced; a safe vegetarian snack.
Aluvi boakiba
Sweet baked cake of grated cassava and coconut. Some recipes use egg, so ask if you avoid it.
Resort Indian menu
Most resorts with Indian guests cook dal, paneer and vegetable curries, jeera rice and rotis daily; ask for less oil or spice if needed.
Phrases that help
| Say | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Mas | Fish, usually tuna — if a dish name contains 'mas', it has fish. |
| Kukulhu | Chicken. |
| Assalaamu alaikum | Hello (the common greeting). |
| Shukuriyaa | Thank you. |
Is it easy to eat vegetarian in the Maldives?
At resorts, yes. Most resorts with Indian guests employ Indian chefs or run an Indian menu, and buffets usually include dal, a paneer or vegetable curry, rice and rotis. Jain meals without onion, garlic and root vegetables are possible at many resorts if you email the request before arrival and remind the restaurant on the first day. Fresh fruit, salads and pasta fill the gaps.
What to watch for on local islands
Maldivian food is built on tuna. Smoked, dried or fresh fish turns up at breakfast (mas huni), in soups (garudhiya), in curries and in almost every café snack. Guesthouse kitchens will usually cook vegetarian food if you ask in advance — vegetable curry, dal, rice, roshi and fried noodles — but the choice is narrow. If you are strict, pack a few ready-to-eat meals or theplas, and ask whether curries use fish stock.
Indian food in Malé and Hulhumalé
Malé and Hulhumalé have several Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants serving dosas, thalis and North Indian curries at local prices, which is useful on a transit night. A meal costs a fraction of resort prices.
Half board, full board or all-inclusive?
| Plan | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Half board | Most vegetarian travellers | Lunch is extra, so snack lightly |
| Full board | Families with children | Drinks are extra |
| All-inclusive | Travellers who drink alcohol | Rarely pays off for teetotal vegetarians |
Practical tips
- Water: resorts provide drinking water, but some charge for bottled brands; ask what is free.
- Ramadan: on local islands, cafés close during daylight in Ramadan, expected from about 8 February to 9 March 2027. Resorts are unaffected.
- Alcohol and pork are served only at resorts, never on local islands.
Email your resort about dietary needs at least a week before arrival — Jain, no-egg and nut allergies included. A named contact in the restaurant makes every meal easier.
