Quick answer
The best time to visit the Maldives is December to April, the dry north-east monsoon, when seas are calm, skies are clear and snorkelling visibility is at its best. Christmas to mid-January is the priciest stretch. May to November is wetter and windier, but resort rates are often a third lower and Baa Atoll's manta season runs from roughly June to November.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?
December to April is the dry north-east monsoon, known locally as iruvai. Expect long sunny days, light winds, flat water for speedboat transfers and 20–30 m visibility on the reefs. February is usually the driest month. The catch is price: the week from Christmas to New Year is the most expensive of the year, and many resorts set minimum stays of four to seven nights.
What is the Maldives like from May to November?
The south-west monsoon (hulhangu) brings rain in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day downpours, plus stronger winds and choppier crossings. Seaplanes fly only in daylight and wait out storms, so build slack into your connections. In return, resort rates are often a third lower than in February, and this is when manta rays gather in Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay. Surfers come for the swell on the North Malé Atoll breaks.
Is the Maldives hot all year?
Yes. Daytime highs sit between 30°C and 32°C every month and the sea stays around 28–29°C, so there is no cold season — only drier and wetter ones. Pack for sun and humidity whatever the month.
