Quick answer

Six days in Mauritius lets you base yourself on the north coast and take three day tours: Port Louis and Pamplemousses, the south with Ganga Talao, Black River Gorges and Chamarel, and an Île aux Cerfs catamaran day. Keep one day free for the beach or an undersea walk. Land costs start around ₹55,000 per person for five nights at a 4★ beach hotel.

The route

  1. SSR International Airport
  2. Grand Baie / Trou aux Biches (north coast base)
  3. day tours north, south and east
  4. airport

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrive and settle on the north coast

    • Morning: Land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south-east. Transfer to the north coast takes 75–90 minutes.

    • Afternoon: Check in, lunch and a slow afternoon on the hotel beach.

    • Evening: Walk along Grand Baie or Pereybère for sunset and an easy dinner — Indian and Creole vegetarian options are plentiful.

Stay: Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches

Buy a local SIM at the airport; Mauritius Telecom and Emtel both have counters in arrivals.

  2. 2

    Day 2

North tour: Port Louis and Pamplemousses

    • Morning: SSR Botanical Garden at Pamplemousses with a licensed guide, then L'Aventure du Sucre next door.

    • Afternoon: Port Louis: Aapravasi Ghat, the Central Market for spices and dholl puri, and the Caudan Waterfront.

    • Evening: Back to the hotel; dinner in Grand Baie.

Stay: Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches

Do this tour on a weekday — Port Louis shops close early on Saturday and most stay shut on Sunday.

  3. 3

    Day 3

South tour: Ganga Talao, Black River Gorges and Chamarel

    • Morning: Trou aux Cerfs crater in Curepipe, then Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) and the Mangal Mahadev statue.

    • Afternoon: Black River Gorges viewpoint, Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth and the Chamarel Falls.

    • Evening: Return along the west coast; stop at Flic en Flac or the Le Morne viewpoint for sunset if time allows.

Stay: Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches

It is a long day of 8–9 hours by car; pack snacks and leave by 8:30 am.

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Île aux Cerfs catamaran day

    • Morning: Drive to the east coast (about 75 minutes) and board a catamaran through the lagoon, with a stop at the Grand River South East waterfall.

    • Afternoon: Barbecue lunch on board, then swimming and optional parasailing at Île aux Cerfs.

    • Evening: Drive back and rest.

Stay: Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches

Request a vegetarian lunch when you book; the standard menu is fish and chicken.

  5. 5

    Day 5

Free beach day or undersea walk

    • Morning: Undersea walk or glass-bottom boat at Grand Baie, or an early dolphin trip from Tamarin for keen wildlife watchers.

    • Afternoon: Beach time, spa or the hotel's free non-motorised water sports.

    • Evening: Shopping at Grand Baie's bazaar and a farewell dinner.

Stay: Grand Baie or Trou aux Biches

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Departure

    • Morning: Breakfast and a last swim. Pick up Mauritian rum, vanilla tea or spices for home.

    • Afternoon: Transfer to the airport (75–90 minutes). Allow three hours before your flight.

    • Evening: Fly home.

Why base yourself on the north coast?

From May to November, the north and west coasts are the sunniest and most sheltered from the trade winds, and Grand Baie has the island's best spread of restaurants, Indian and vegetarian food included. Every day tour on this plan starts within 45–90 minutes of the hotel, so you check in once and never repack. In the December–April summer, the east coast around Belle Mare is an equally good base.

How to adapt this plan

  • Honeymooners: split the stay — three nights on the north coast for tours, two on the east coast at Belle Mare for a quieter beach resort.
  • Families with young children: keep the south tour short by skipping Black River Gorges, and add Casela Nature Park on day five.
  • Seniors: the south tour is mostly by car with short walks. Skip parasailing and the Le Morne hike.
  • Pilgrims: plan around Maha Shivaratri at Ganga Talao, expected around 6 March 2027, and expect slow traffic in the south.

What this itinerary costs

Land cost starts at about ₹55,000 per person for five nights at a 4★ beach hotel with half board, private transfers, three tours and the island's tourist fee. Return flights from Mumbai or Bengaluru add ₹35,000–55,000. See the Mauritius trip cost guide for a full breakdown, where to stay in Mauritius to compare coasts, and things to do in Mauritius for excursion prices.

Indian passport holders do not need a visa in advance, but must carry a return ticket and hotel booking — see the Mauritius visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is six days enough for Mauritius?
Yes. Six days (five nights) covers the three classic tours — north, south and the Île aux Cerfs catamaran — and leaves a full free day. With seven or eight nights you can split hotels between two coasts or add a Le Morne hike and a dolphin trip without rushing.
Which is the best area to stay for a first trip to Mauritius?
Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches on the north coast are the most practical for a first trip: calm lagoons, many restaurants, and easy access to Port Louis and the day tours. Belle Mare on the east coast is quieter and better for resort-focused honeymoons, especially in the summer months.
Do I need a private car for these tours?
Not essential, but it helps. Shared coach tours are cheaper for couples, while a private car with driver at about ₹9,000–14,000 a day usually works out better for families of four and lets you control timings, food stops and temple visits.
