How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Book an open-jaw ticket into New York and out of San Francisco or Los Angeles; it usually costs no more than a return to one city.
- Stay in Long Island City or Jersey City instead of Midtown; you are 10–15 minutes from Manhattan by subway or PATH train at a noticeably lower rate.
- Travel between mid-January and early March, or late October to early December outside Diwali, for the lowest fares from India.
- If a family in one car will visit two or more of the surcharged national parks, the USD 250 non-resident annual pass is usually cheaper than paying USD 100 per person at each.
- Compare hotel prices including resort fees in Las Vegas and destination fees in New York, which are added on top of quoted rates.
- Eat a big lunch at Indian buffets or food halls and pick up snacks and fruit from supermarkets for the evening.

Visa, TCS and forex
The B1/B2 visa fee is USD 185 (about ₹16,300), and interview waits in Indian cities have been running at 10–12 months, so start with our US visa guide or visa assistance. A separate USD 250 visa integrity fee has been legislated in the US; check whether it is being collected when you apply.
If you book a tour package, TCS of 2% applies to overseas packages from April 2026, and you can adjust it against your income tax. Carry most of your spending money on a forex card rather than an Indian debit card; our foreign exchange team can load one. Buy travel insurance with high medical cover.
