For a first visit, stay in Midtown Manhattan, between 34th and 59th Streets, so you can walk to Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park. Families who want quieter streets and Indian food nearby should look at Murray Hill. On a tighter budget, Long Island City in Queens or Jersey City are one or two train stops from Manhattan at lower rates.

Where should you stay in New York on a first visit?

Midtown Manhattan, roughly between 34th and 59th Streets, is the easiest base for a first trip. Most Indian travellers spend three or four nights in New York, and staying in Midtown means walking to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue and Central Park, with the subway on your doorstep for everything else.

If the budget is tight, do not stay far out to save money. Long Island City and Jersey City are only one or two stops from Manhattan; anything that needs a long bus or train ride costs you time you cannot get back on a short trip.

How much do New York hotels cost?

A 3★ double in Midtown typically costs USD 220–350 a night in spring and autumn, and more in December. On top of the quoted rate, expect about 15% in taxes plus a small nightly charge, and many hotels add a "destination fee" of USD 25–45 a night. Compare final prices, not headline rates.

What should Indian families check before booking?

  • Room size: standard Manhattan rooms are small and many sleep only two. A family of four should book a room with two queen beds, or two rooms.
  • Kettle: most US hotels have no kettle in the room. Ask, or carry a compact travel kettle for tea and instant meals.
  • Airport transfer: JFK to Midtown takes 45–75 minutes and Newark 40–60 minutes; pre-book a car with luggage space if you have big bags.

Rates are lowest from mid-January to February and highest from late November to New Year. See the best time to visit the USA.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best area to stay in New York for Indian families?
Midtown East and Murray Hill suit most Indian families: central enough to walk to Grand Central and Fifth Avenue, quieter than Times Square at night, and close to Lexington Avenue's Indian restaurants and grocers. Book a room with two queen beds for a family of four, and confirm the hotel can provide a kettle.
Is it safe to stay near Times Square?
Yes. Times Square is heavily policed and busy at almost all hours, so it is one of the safer parts of the city late at night. The issues are noise, crowds, pickpockets and costumed characters who demand money for photos. Choose a hotel on a side street rather than directly on the square for a quieter night.
Is it cheaper to stay in New Jersey instead of Manhattan?
Usually yes. Hotels in Jersey City and near Newark often cost noticeably less than comparable Manhattan rooms. Jersey City is the better choice, 10–15 minutes from Manhattan on the PATH train. Hotels near Newark airport are cheaper still but need a train or taxi to reach the city, which adds time and cost each day.
