Quick answer

For most Indian travellers, the best time to visit the USA is late April to June or September to October. New York and Washington are mild, the Grand Canyon and the western parks are open without extreme heat, and autumn fares are lower than the May–June school-holiday rush. With B1/B2 interview waits of 10–12 months in India, book the visa appointment before you pick dates.

When is the best time to visit the USA from India?

The USA is too big for a single answer, so plan around the two halves most first-timers combine: New York, Washington DC and Niagara in the east, and Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles and San Francisco in the west. Both line up best in late April to June and September to October. The table uses New York's long-term averages; the West Coast is milder in winter, while the desert parks are far hotter in summer.

B1/B2 interview waits in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad were running at roughly 10–12 months at the time of review. If you do not hold a valid US visa, apply first and fix travel dates once you have an appointment. Our US visa guide covers documents and fees.

Month by month

Spring (March to May)

March is still cold and wet in New York. From mid-April Central Park turns green and Grand Canyon South Rim days sit at a comfortable 15–20°C. Washington's cherry blossoms usually peak between late March and early April. May is close to perfect, but Indian school holidays push fares up from the middle of the month.

Summer (June to August)

Long days and everything open, but New York is humid at 28–30°C, Las Vegas and Death Valley cross 40°C, and July–August brings the year's highest hotel rates. Late summer can bring wildfire smoke in California and hurricanes on the East Coast.

Autumn (September to November)

The best all-round window. The weather settles, desert parks cool down and New England's foliage peaks from late September to late October. New York hotels stay expensive, though, and Thanksgiving week (26 November 2026) is the priciest time to fly within the US.

Winter (December to February)

New York at Christmas, with the Rockefeller Center tree and ice rinks, draws plenty of Indian families in the December holidays. Expect sub-zero nights and peak airfares from India. Mid-January to February is the cheapest time to fly and the cheapest for Manhattan hotels. Snow closes Yosemite's Tioga Road from about November until late May.

Which months should you avoid?

No month is a write-off. July–August is the worst value for the desert parks, and the second half of December is the costliest for flights. For quieter streets and lower hotel rates, go between late January and early March and pack for the cold.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the cheapest month to fly to the USA from India?
Mid-January to early March, and late October to early December outside the Diwali and Christmas weeks, usually bring the lowest fares. One-stop return tickets from Delhi or Mumbai then often sit around ₹85,000–1,10,000. May–June and the second half of December are the most expensive, when the same routes commonly cross ₹1.4 lakh.
Is May–June a good time for an Indian family trip to the USA?
The weather is excellent, but it is peak demand. Fares from India are at their highest, theme parks in California and Florida are crowded, and Las Vegas is already very hot by June. If school holidays leave no choice, book flights three to four months ahead and lock in hotels early, especially in New York.
When can I see snow in New York?
Snow is most likely from late December to early March, with January and February the best bets. It is never guaranteed: some winters bring only a couple of real snowfalls. For reliable snow and skiing, pair New York with upstate New York, Vermont or Colorado rather than counting on Manhattan.
Is the Grand Canyon too hot to visit in summer?
The South Rim sits at about 2,100 m, so summer days there are a manageable 25–30°C. The heat problem is the canyon floor, which can pass 40°C, and the drive through Las Vegas. Avoid hiking below the rim at midday from June to August and carry far more water than you think you need.
How far ahead should I plan a USA trip?
If you need a new B1/B2 visa, start 12 months or more ahead, because interview waits in Indian cities have been running at 10–12 months. If you already hold a valid visa, three to four months is enough to get reasonable fares and central hotels, except for Christmas and Thanksgiving, which need more lead time.
