Quick answer
₹50,000 per person including return flights reliably covers five nights in Nepal, Sri Lanka (from south India) or Thailand, four nights in Dubai, and four or five nights in Bhutan by road, Almaty, Baku or Siem Reap. Expect 3★ hotels, shared transfers and group tours. It does not stretch to Bali, Singapore, a week in Vietnam or a Maldives resort.
Key takeaways
- At ₹50,000, the airfare decides everything: destinations under five hours with low-cost flights leave ₹25,000–35,000 for the ground.
- Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are the most comfortable fits; Dubai, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Cambodia fit only from the right city or in low-fare weeks.
- Expect 3★ hotels, shared transfers and group tours. Private cars and beachfront rooms push most trips past ₹55,000.
- Visa, TCS, insurance and card charges can add ₹3,000–10,000 per person, so count them before comparing quotes.
What does ₹50,000 per person buy abroad?
Split it realistically. Return flights take ₹10,000–30,000, depending on where you fly from and how early you book. The remaining ₹20,000–40,000 pays for four or five nights in a 3★ hotel near public transport, breakfast, shared airport transfers, two or three group tours, simple meals and local transport.
It does not buy private cars, beachfront rooms, checked bags on low-cost airlines, or travel in the 20 December–5 January peak. Every figure below is per person, twin sharing, with return economy flights from the city named, booked six to eight weeks ahead.
Which international trips fit under ₹50,000?
| Destination | Nights | Starting cost per person, with flights | Visa | Cheapest from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nepal (Kathmandu, Pokhara) | 5 | ₹28,000+ | None; passport or voter ID | Delhi, Kolkata |
| Sri Lanka (Kandy, a beach) | 5 | ₹38,000+ | ETA, fee waived | Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi |
| Thailand (Bangkok, Pattaya) | 5 | ₹40,000+ | Visa-free, 30 days | Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi |
| Dubai | 4 | ₹42,000+ (visa included) | Pre-applied e-visa | Mumbai, Kochi, Delhi |
| Bhutan (by road) | 5 | ₹45,000+ (SDF included) | Entry permit | Delhi, Kolkata (to Bagdogra) |
| Kazakhstan (Almaty) | 4 | ₹48,000+ | Visa-free, 14 days | Delhi |
| Azerbaijan (Baku) | 4 | ₹48,000+ | e-visa, about ₹2,300 | Delhi |
| Cambodia (Siem Reap) | 4 | ₹48,000+ | e-visa or on arrival | Kolkata |
Close, but usually over ₹50,000: Vietnam (seven nights from about ₹62,000), a Maldives local island (four nights from about ₹55,000), Georgia (five nights from about ₹58,000), Singapore (four nights land only from about ₹38,000, before flights) and Bali (six nights land only from about ₹32,000, before fares of ₹28,000 or more).
Which are the best picks, and why?
Nepal: the cheapest, with no paperwork
Nepal tops the list because there is no visa and flights from Delhi or Kolkata are short; the Nepal trip cost starts around ₹28,000. Carry a passport or voter ID (Aadhaar is not accepted for entry) and ₹100 notes, which are accepted widely. Kathmandu's temples, Pokhara's lake and a Sarangkot sunrise make a full five nights. Road travel via Sunauli or Raxaul is cheaper again, but long.
Thailand: the default for good reason
Bangkok and Pattaya on a 3★ budget is the classic first trip, with visa-free entry and fares from Kolkata often under ₹15,000. Phuket and Krabi cost more because of the flights and boat trips. See the Thailand visa rules for the arrival card, and the Thailand trip cost for a line-by-line budget.
Sri Lanka: best value from the south
From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi the flight is an hour or so and fares are low, so a five-night Kandy and beach trip fits easily. From Delhi it is tight. The car and driver is the big land cost, so it is cheaper per person in a group of four; the Sri Lanka trip cost assumes exactly that.
Dubai: short flight, careful dates
The ₹42,000 starting price includes the UAE visa, a 3★ hotel in Deira or Bur Dubai and shared tours. It holds only in low-fare weeks. December, Diwali and Eid push fares up sharply, and from June to August it is cheap but very hot.
Bhutan by road: slower, but under budget
Fly to Bagdogra, drive to Phuentsholing and on to Thimphu and Paro. The Sustainable Development Fee is ₹1,200 per person per night, so five nights adds ₹6,000. A vehicle and guide shared by a group keeps it under ₹50,000; a private car for two does not. Indian rupees are accepted at par.
Almaty and Baku: a different look for similar money
Non-stop flights from Delhi have made Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan four-night options at ₹48,000 or more. Kazakhstan is visa-free for up to 14 days at the time of review (Kazakhstan visa); Azerbaijan needs a quick e-visa. From Mumbai or the south, the extra fare usually breaks the budget. Winters are properly cold, which is the attraction for snow-seekers.
Siem Reap: temples for the money
Cambodia's Angkor temples are the most dramatic sight on this list for the price. Four nights in Siem Reap with a three-day Angkor Pass, a tuk-tuk for the temple days and a Tonle Sap boat trip starts around ₹48,000, mostly because the flights involve a connection. Kolkata has the cheapest fares; from Delhi or Mumbai, expect to pay ₹10,000 or more extra. November to February is the comfortable season; April is fiercely hot.
What do you give up at ₹50,000?
- Private transfers and tours. You share vans, boats and guides.
- Location. Hotels are near a metro or bus line, not on the beach.
- Baggage. Low-cost fares at this level are usually cabin-only, about 7 kg.
- Big-ticket attractions. Theme parks, Burj Khalifa upper decks and private island boats will push you over.
- Peak dates. Christmas, New Year, Diwali and the May–June holidays are rarely possible at this price.
How do you keep the trip under ₹50,000?
- Book the flights first, six to eight weeks ahead, and fly midweek.
- Fly from the cheapest gateway: Kolkata for Bangkok and Siem Reap, Chennai or Kochi for Colombo, Delhi for Kathmandu, Almaty and Baku.
- Use public transport: Bangkok's BTS and MRT, the Dubai Metro, local buses in Kathmandu.
- Load a forex card and decline dynamic currency conversion at card machines.
- Count the 2% TCS on overseas packages. On ₹50,000 that is ₹1,000, which you can adjust against your income tax when you file.
If your dates are fixed in December or May, raise the budget or switch to an Indian destination. A ₹50,000 international trip depends on flexible dates more than anything else.
