Quick answer

India's best beaches are Radhanagar on Havelock in the Andaman Islands, Lakshadweep's lagoons, Palolem and Agonda in South Goa, Gokarna's Om and Kudle, Varkala's cliff beach and Tarkarli in Maharashtra. Go to the west coast and islands between November and March or April. On the east coast, Odisha is best from October to February, and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from January to March.

Key takeaways

  • The west coast and the islands are at their best from November to March; avoid June–September, when monsoon seas close beaches to swimming and water sports.
  • On the east coast, Odisha is best from October to February, and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from January to March, after the north-east monsoon.
  • Radhanagar (Andaman) and Lakshadweep have the clearest water; South Goa, Gokarna and Varkala are the best mainland picks for couples.
  • Blue Flag beaches such as Radhanagar, Shivrajpur, Rushikonda and Eden have lifeguards, clean water and proper facilities.

When is beach season on each coast?

India has two very different coastlines. The west coast takes the full force of the south-west monsoon from June to September. The east coast gets its heaviest rain from the north-east monsoon and cyclones between October and December. The islands follow their own pattern.

Which are the best beaches on the west coast?

Goa: two different holidays

North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator) means shacks, water sports and nightlife, and it is crowded from November to January. Further north, Morjim, Ashwem and Arambol are calmer. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Cola, Benaulim, Betalbatim) is where couples and families go for quieter, cleaner sand, and Agonda is also an olive ridley turtle nesting beach. Three nights land only starts around ₹10,000 per person. See the best time to visit Goa and things to do in Goa.

Gokarna, Karnataka

Om, Kudle and Half Moon beaches are linked by coastal walking trails, with simple cafés and cottages. Gokarna suits backpackers and couples rather than families who want resorts. Combine it with the Murudeshwar temple and dives at Netrani Island in season.

Varkala, Kovalam and Marari, Kerala

Varkala has red laterite cliffs above the beach, lined with cafés; the sea has a strong undertow, so swim only between the lifeguard flags. Kovalam's Lighthouse Beach is the busiest. Marari, near Alleppey, is a quiet fishing-village beach that pairs well with a houseboat night. See things to do in Kerala.

Tarkarli and the Konkan, Maharashtra

Tarkarli, near Malvan, has the clearest water on the Maharashtra coast, with snorkelling and scuba diving in the dry season, and Sindhudurg sea fort is nearby. Mumbai's weekend beaches, Alibag and Kashid, are convenient but crowded.

Gujarat and Diu

Shivrajpur near Dwarka and Ghoghla in Diu both hold Blue Flag certification, with clean sand and calm water in winter.

Which are the best beaches on the east coast?

  • Puri, Odisha. A pilgrimage town with a long, busy beach; its Golden Beach stretch is Blue Flag certified. Currents are strong, so swim only where lifeguards are posted. Gopalpur, further south, is quieter.
  • Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam. A Blue Flag beach with good facilities, easily combined with the Araku Valley.
  • Mahabalipuram and the East Coast Road. The Shore Temple, seafood shacks and a small surf scene at Kovalam (Covelong) near Chennai, another Blue Flag beach.
  • Puducherry. The Promenade is rocky, so swim at Eden Beach (Blue Flag) or the beaches north towards Auroville. See the best time to visit Puducherry.

Which island beaches are worth the extra cost?

The Andaman Islands have India's finest sand and clearest water. Radhanagar on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) is the famous one, with Kalapathar and Elephant Beach for snorkelling; Laxmanpur and Bharatpur on Shaheed Dweep (Neil) are quieter. Obey crocodile warning signs and swim only at designated beaches. Five nights land only starts around ₹22,000 per person. The best time to visit Andaman is November to April, and things to do in the Andaman Islands lists the dive sites.

Lakshadweep is lagoons and coral on a handful of islands open to visitors, including Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat. Every visitor, Indian citizens included, needs an entry permit, and flights and ships from Kochi are limited, so it costs more and takes more effort than Andaman. What does a beach holiday in India cost?

Starting land costs per person, twin sharing in 3★–4★ hotels, are about ₹10,000 for three nights in Goa, ₹19,000 for five nights in Kerala combining a beach with Munnar and a houseboat, and ₹22,000 for five nights in Andaman, before flights. Goa and Andaman hotel rates peak from mid-December to early January, when the same room can cost far more than it did in November, so travel in November, February or March if your dates are flexible. Lakshadweep costs considerably more because of permits, limited flights and only a handful of places to stay.

How safe is swimming at Indian beaches?

Many Indian beaches have strong rip currents, especially on the west coast and at Puri. Swim only between flags where lifeguards are on duty, never after drinking, and never during the monsoon, when most coastal states ban swimming and water sports. Blue Flag beaches have lifeguards, tested water and facilities, and certification is renewed every year. At the last count, India's list included Radhanagar, Shivrajpur, Ghoghla, Kasarkod, Padubidri, Kappad, Kovalam (Tamil Nadu), Eden, Rushikonda, Golden Beach in Puri, and Thundi and Kadmat in Lakshadweep.

Book Andaman ferries as soon as your flights are fixed. The private catamarans between Port Blair, Havelock and Neil fill up weeks ahead in December and January, and their timings shape the whole itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best beach in India?
Radhanagar on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) in the Andaman Islands is the most widely rated, with wide white sand, clear water, a forest backdrop and Blue Flag certification. On the mainland, Palolem and Agonda in South Goa and Om Beach in Gokarna are favourites, and Lakshadweep's lagoons have the clearest water of all.
Which is the cleanest beach in India?
Blue Flag beaches meet international standards for water quality, safety and environmental management. At the last count India had twelve, including Radhanagar (Andaman), Shivrajpur (Gujarat), Ghoghla (Diu), Rushikonda (Andhra Pradesh), Eden (Puducherry), Kovalam (Tamil Nadu), Kappad (Kerala) and Golden Beach in Puri. Certification is reviewed every year.
Is Goa good during the monsoon?
Not for beaches. From June to September the sea is rough, swimming and water sports are banned, and many shacks close. The monsoon is still a good time for a different Goa trip: green countryside, waterfalls such as Dudhsagar, spice farms, Old Goa's churches, cafés and much lower hotel rates.
Andaman or Goa for a beach holiday?
Choose Andaman for clearer water, snorkelling and diving, and quieter beaches; it costs more because of flights and ferries and needs five or six nights. Choose Goa for an easier, cheaper trip with nightlife and food that works in three or four nights. Couples and nature lovers lean to Andaman, groups to Goa.
Do Indians need a permit to visit Lakshadweep?
Yes. Every visitor, including Indian citizens, needs an entry permit from the Lakshadweep administration, usually arranged with your booking through a registered operator. Supporting documents such as a police clearance certificate are usually required. Flights and ships from Kochi are limited, so plan well ahead.
Which beaches in India are safe for swimming?
The calmest options in season are South Goa's Benaulim, Betalbatim and Palolem, Radhanagar and Elephant Beach in Andaman, Lakshadweep's lagoons, Marari in Kerala and the Blue Flag beaches with lifeguards. Avoid open-sea swimming at Puri and anywhere on the west coast during the monsoon, and always swim between the flags.
