Quick answer

Ranked by the total cost of a typical trip with flights, the cheapest international destinations from India are Nepal, Sri Lanka (from south India), Thailand, Dubai and Bhutan by road, followed by Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, a Maldives local island and Vietnam. Nepal and Sri Lanka win on short flights and no visa fee; Vietnam is cheapest per night on longer trips.

Key takeaways

  • The cheapest trip is decided by two costs: getting there (flight plus visa) and daily spend on the ground. Short, cheap flights matter more than low prices once you land.
  • Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand charge Indians no visa fee at the time of review, and all three are under five hours from a major Indian city.
  • Vietnam costs more in total because the flights are longer, but at about ₹8,900 a night it beats Dubai and Central Asia on value for trips of a week or more.
  • Bali, Singapore and Georgia feel cheap on the ground but are not cheap overall, because of flights, hotel rates or visa effort.

How is 'cheapest' measured here?

Two costs decide whether a country is cheap for you. The first is getting there: the return airfare from your city plus any visa fee. The second is staying there: hotel rates and what you spend each day on food, transport and entry fees. A country with low prices but a ₹40,000 flight is not cheap; a country with average prices and a ₹12,000 flight often is.

The ranking below uses the starting price of a typical 4–7 night budget trip with return flights, per person, twin sharing, in 3★ hotels, as used across our trip cost guides. The per-night column divides that total by the nights, which helps compare trips of different lengths.

Why does each destination rank where it does?

1. Nepal. Flights from Delhi or Kolkata cost ₹10,000–18,000 return, there is no visa, and Indian rupees in ₹100 notes are accepted widely. Daily costs are close to an Indian hill station. See the Nepal trip cost and the Nepal entry rules.

2. Sri Lanka. From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi, fares of ₹10,000–22,000 and a free ETA make it the cheapest country from the south. The main land cost is a car and driver, which gets cheaper per person in a group. From Delhi, fares of ₹20,000–32,000 drop it a few places. Details are on the Sri Lanka trip cost page.

3. Thailand. Visa-free entry, fares from Kolkata as low as ₹13,000, and 3★ hotels in Bangkok and Pattaya at modest rates. Daily spend is slightly higher than Sri Lanka's, but the choice of flights from every metro keeps it near the top. The Thailand trip cost has the breakdown.

4. Dubai. Short flights from almost every Indian city and frequent fare sales offset a visa fee and higher hotel prices. It falls quickly down the list in December and during Eid and Diwali, when hotel rates jump.

5. Bhutan by road. The flight to Bagdogra is cheap and Indian rupees are accepted at par, but the Sustainable Development Fee of ₹1,200 per person per night and the need for a guide and vehicle keep it mid-table. Flying into Paro instead costs far more; compare both on the Bhutan trip cost page.

6 to 8. Cambodia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. All three cost around ₹48,000 for four nights, and in each case the flight is the main cost. Cambodia works best from Kolkata. Almaty and Baku work best from Delhi, which has non-stop flights; Kazakhstan is visa-free for up to 14 days at the time of review, as the Kazakhstan visa guide explains.

9. Maldives on a local island. A guesthouse on Maafushi or Thoddoo costs about the same per night as a mid-range hotel in Bangkok, and the visa is free. The flight, about ₹15,000–28,000 from Kochi or Chennai and more from Delhi, and the speedboat transfers are what make it a ₹55,000 trip.

10. Vietnam. It ranks last on total cost because a seven-night trip with ₹22,000–35,000 fares is a bigger spend. Per night, it is among the best value on this list, and the Vietnam e-visa costs about ₹2,200. If you have a week or more, Vietnam beats Dubai and Central Asia for the money.

Which 'cheap' destinations are not actually cheap?

  • Bali. Meals and villas are cheap, but return fares of ₹28,000–40,000 plus the visa on arrival and tourist levy put a six-night trip above ₹60,000.
  • Singapore. Visa and flights are reasonable, but hotel rooms and attractions are among the most expensive in Asia; four nights land only starts around ₹38,000 before flights.
  • Georgia and Turkey. Prices on the ground are fair, but flights cost more, and Turkey needs a VFS sticker visa for most Indians.
  • Malaysia. Visa-free entry until 31 December 2026 helps, and low-cost fares from south India can be good, but hotels in Kuala Lumpur and add-ons like Langkawi or Genting quickly lift the total. Check the Malaysia visa rules and compare a quote with Thailand's.

How can you make any of these cheaper?

  • Fly from the cheapest gateway: Kolkata for Bangkok, Siem Reap and Bagdogra; Chennai or Kochi for Colombo and Malé; Delhi for Kathmandu, Almaty and Baku.
  • Travel in shoulder months: late January to March and the weeks after Diwali are cheaper than December or May–June.
  • Choose shared tours and transfers; private cars are the biggest single upgrade cost in Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Vietnam.
  • Use a forex card, decline dynamic currency conversion, and budget for the 2% TCS on overseas packages, which you can adjust against your income tax.

Compare destinations on cost per night, not just the headline price. A ₹62,000 week in Vietnam can be better value than a ₹48,000 long weekend in Baku.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the cheapest country to visit from India?
Nepal. Return flights from Delhi or Kolkata cost ₹10,000–18,000, there is no visa, Indian rupees are accepted, and a five-night Kathmandu and Pokhara trip starts around ₹28,000 per person with flights. By road via Sunauli or Raxaul it costs even less, though the journey is long.
Which is cheaper, Thailand or Vietnam?
Thailand is cheaper for a short trip: five nights with flights starts around ₹40,000 against about ₹62,000 for a week in Vietnam, mainly because flights to Bangkok cost less and need no visa. Per night on the ground, Vietnam is similar or slightly better value, so it wins on trips of seven nights or more.
Is Dubai cheap to visit from India?
Dubai is cheap to reach but not cheap to stay in. Four nights with flights, visa and shared tours starts around ₹42,000 per person in low-fare weeks. Hotel rates jump in December and during Eid and Diwali, and attractions like upper Burj Khalifa decks and theme parks add up quickly.
Which cheap countries need no visa for Indians?
At the time of review, Nepal and Bhutan need no visa (Bhutan needs an entry permit and the daily SDF), Thailand allows 30 days visa-free, Malaysia 30 days until 31 December 2026, and Kazakhstan 14 days. Sri Lanka's ETA and the Maldives visa on arrival are free. Rules change, so check before booking.
Is Bhutan expensive because of the SDF?
Less than many people think. Indians pay a Sustainable Development Fee of ₹1,200 per person per night, so five nights adds ₹6,000. Travelling by road from Bagdogra with a shared vehicle, a five-night trip starts around ₹45,000 per person with flights. Flying into Paro and using a private car costs considerably more.
Which is the cheapest international destination from South India?
Sri Lanka. Return fares from Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi are usually ₹10,000–22,000, the ETA is free for Indians at the time of review, and a five-night trip starts around ₹38,000 per person with flights. A Maldives local-island trip is the next option from Kochi or Chennai.
