How to spend less without ruining the trip
- Order the menú del día at lunch: two courses, bread and a drink for about €14–20 at many restaurants.
- Book Sagrada Família and the Alhambra on the official sites; resale prices can be double or more.
- Use the Prado's free last two hours and Barcelona's free museum Sunday afternoons where they apply.
- Book the Seville–Madrid AVE and the Barcelona–Seville flight 4–6 weeks out; low-cost rail operators often undercut both.
- Buy a T-casual 10-trip card in Barcelona instead of single Metro tickets.
- Pay in euros, not rupees, at card machines to avoid dynamic currency conversion.
How much does a Spain trip cost from India?
For a 7-night trip covering Barcelona, Seville and Madrid, budget about ₹1.5 lakh per person at mid-range, twin sharing, including flights, Schengen visa and insurance. Budget trips start near ₹1.2 lakh; luxury runs from ₹3.1 lakh. Figures assume late-2026 rates and €1 = ₹102.
Where does the money go?
On a mid-range trip, roughly:
- Flights: about a third. There are no regular non-stop flights from most Indian cities to Spain, so most travellers connect through the Gulf, Istanbul or a European hub. An open-jaw ticket into Barcelona and out of Madrid usually costs the same as a return.
- Hotels: 25–40%. Barcelona is the priciest; Seville and Madrid offer more for the money.
- Attractions: about 10–15%. The Sagrada Família is €26 (€36 with a tower) on the official site, the Alhambra about €20, and the Prado €15.
- Food: about 15–20%. Spain is easy on the wallet at lunchtime with set menus.
Visa, insurance and TCS
A Schengen visa costs €90 (about ₹9,200) plus the visa centre's service charge, and you need insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover. Apply through the Spanish visa centre if Spain is your main destination — see our Spain visa guide.
If you book a package through an Indian agent, TCS is collected on the overseas tour package at the rate in force when you pay. It isn't a lasting cost: adjust it against your income tax or claim it back as a refund, using Form 26AS. GST appears separately on the invoice.
Hidden costs to watch
- Tourist tax: charged per person per night, highest in Barcelona and the Balearics.
- Pickpocketing: not a fee, but a common loss in Barcelona. Keep cards in a front pocket and use a forex card with instant lock.
- Resale tickets: unofficial sites often charge far above official prices.
When is Spain cheapest?
November to February brings low hotel rates and short queues, with mild weather on the coast. Easter, May–June and September–October are busier and pricier, and July–August is peak season on the coast. See the best time to visit Spain.
