Quick answer

Indian passport holders need a visa for Oman, and the usual route is the Royal Oman Police e-visa, applied for online before travel. It typically costs OMR 5–20 (₹1,150–4,600) depending on duration and arrives in one to three working days. Oman announced a free 14-day tourist visa in August 2026, but India was not on a published eligibility list when we reviewed.

Documents checklist

  • Passport valid for at least six months from arrival
  • Colour scan of the passport photo page
  • Recent passport-size photo on a white background, as a digital file
  • Confirmed return or onward air ticket
  • Hotel booking for the whole stay, or a host's address
  • Copy of a valid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian or Japanese visa if you are using it to qualify for a simpler route
  • For road entry from the UAE: car insurance valid in Oman and a multiple-entry UAE visa to return

Common mistakes that get Indians refused

  • The free 14-day tourist visa created by ROP Decision 109/2026 does not yet list India; do not travel on the assumption that it applies to you.
  • Agency websites claiming Indians are visa-free for 14 days are not backed by the official gazette notice; apply for the paid e-visa.
  • Driving from Dubai into Oman means exiting the UAE, so a single-entry UAE visa leaves you stuck at the border on the way back.
  • Only apply on evisa.rop.gov.om or through a known agent; copycat sites charge several times the government fee.

Do Indians need a visa for Oman?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a visa, and the practical route is the Royal Oman Police (ROP) e-visa. It is issued online, is linked to your passport number and costs far less than most Gulf visas. Fees depend on the visa length and are paid in Omani rials, roughly OMR 5–20 (₹1,150–4,600).

What about the new free 14-day visa?

Oman's Royal Oman Police Decision 109/2026 created a free 14-day tourist visa, effective from 3 August 2026. The rules say it is available to nationals of countries the authorities designate. When we reviewed, no list including India had been published, so treat it as not yet available. If India is added, this page will change; until then, budget for the paid e-visa.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Register on the ROP e-visa portal with an email address.
  2. Choose the unsponsored tourist visa that matches your trip length.
  3. Upload your passport scan and photo, and enter your hotel or host address.
  4. Pay by card. Most approvals arrive within one to three working days.
  5. Print the visa and carry it with your return ticket.

Indians holding a valid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian or Japanese visa have historically had an easier route, including visa on arrival with a hotel booking and return ticket. Confirm the current terms on the portal before you rely on it.

What officers check

Muscat airport is calm and orderly. Officers look at the e-visa, your return ticket and occasionally your hotel booking. Tourists are rarely asked for bank statements. At the Hatta and Al Ain land borders the queue is slower and checks are stricter: officers want to see both your Oman visa and proof you can re-enter the UAE.

Families, seniors and road trips

Each traveller needs a separate e-visa, including children. Oman suits families and older travellers who find Dubai too hectic: the drives through Wadi Shab, Nizwa and the Hajar mountains are long but on excellent roads. Carry medical insurance, since private hospitals charge visitors heavily.

If you are combining Dubai and Oman by road, apply for a multiple-entry UAE visa from the start. It is the most common mistake we see on Gulf road trips.

Plan the rest of the trip with the Oman trip cost guide, the best time to visit Oman and things to do in Oman. For the Dubai leg, read the UAE visa guide. Our visa assistance desk can file both visas together.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oman visa-free for Indians in 2026?
No. Indian passport holders still need a visa. Oman introduced a free 14-day tourist visa in August 2026, but the eligible nationalities are designated separately and no published list included India when we reviewed. Apply for the paid e-visa on the Royal Oman Police portal, which costs about OMR 5–20 depending on duration.
How long does an Oman e-visa take for Indians?
Most applications are approved within one to three working days, sometimes faster. Apply at least a week before travel to leave room for a request for a clearer photo or passport scan. The visa is emailed to you and linked to your passport, but carry a printout because airline staff in India usually ask to see it.
Can I drive from Dubai to Oman on an Indian passport?
Yes, with an Oman e-visa obtained in advance, car insurance valid in Oman and a UAE visa that allows re-entry. A single-entry UAE visa is cancelled when you exit, so ask for a multiple-entry UAE visa if your plan includes the Hatta or Al Ain crossings. Rental companies also need written permission to take the car across.
Do Indians with a US or Schengen visa get easier entry to Oman?
Historically yes. Indians holding a valid US, UK, Schengen, Canadian, Australian or Japanese visa have been able to get a visa on arrival or a quicker e-visa, provided they have a hotel booking and a return ticket. These terms change, so check the Royal Oman Police portal before relying on them.
