Quick answer

Six days in Oman covers a classic loop: two days in Muscat, the coast road to Wadi Shab and the Ras al Jinz turtles, Wadi Bani Khalid and a night in the Wahiba Sands, then Nizwa Fort and Jebel Akhdar before returning to Muscat. Mid-range land cost starts at about ₹52,000 per person with a 4WD and driver-guide, excluding flights.

The route

  1. Muscat
  2. Bimmah
  3. Wadi Shab
  4. Ras al Jinz
  5. Wadi Bani Khalid
  6. Wahiba Sands
  7. Nizwa
  8. Jebel Akhdar
  9. Muscat

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Arrive in Muscat

    • Morning: Land at Muscat International Airport; Qurum or Mutrah is 25–40 minutes away.

    • Afternoon: Check in and rest. Short drive along the Qurum beach road.

    • Evening: Mutrah Corniche at sunset and the souq for frankincense, halwa and silver.

    Stay: Muscat (Qurum or Mutrah)

Many souq shops close from about 1 to 4 pm and on Friday mornings.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Muscat's highlights

    • Morning: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque at 8 am (non-Muslim visitors usually 8–11 am, Saturday to Thursday).

    • Afternoon: Old Muscat: Al Alam Palace exterior, the forts and the National Museum. Royal Opera House tour if timings suit.

    • Evening: Sunset dhow cruise along the coast, or a performance at the Royal Opera House.

    Stay: Muscat (Qurum or Mutrah)

Women need a headscarf and ankle-length clothing at the mosque.

  3. 3

    Day 3

Coast road, Wadi Shab and turtles

    • Morning: Drive the coast road to Bimmah Sinkhole (about 1 hour).

    • Afternoon: Wadi Shab: boat crossing, 45-minute hike and swim to the cave waterfall. Continue to Sur's dhow yard.

    • Evening: Guided turtle watch at the Ras al Jinz reserve.

Stay: Ras al Jinz or Sur

Carry a dry bag and grippy shoes for the wadi; swim in shorts and a T-shirt.

  4. 4

    Day 4

Wadi Bani Khalid and the Wahiba Sands

    • Morning: Drive about 1.5 hours to Wadi Bani Khalid for a swim in its clear pools.

    • Afternoon: Continue to the Wahiba Sands; your driver lowers tyre pressure for the sand track to camp.

    • Evening: Sunset dune drive, dinner at camp and stargazing.

    Stay: Wahiba Sands desert camp

Confirm vegetarian dinner with the camp ahead; the default menu is often meat-heavy.

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Nizwa Fort and Jebel Akhdar

    • Morning: Drive about 2.5 hours to Nizwa. Visit the fort and the souq.

    • Afternoon: Head up to Jebel Akhdar (4WD required at the checkpoint). Walk the terraced villages.

    • Evening: Sunset over the canyon from your hotel; cool mountain air even in spring.

    Stay: Jebel Akhdar

If day five is a Friday, reach Nizwa by 7 am for the goat and cattle market.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Terraces and back to Muscat

    • Morning: Short village walk among the rose and pomegranate terraces, then drive about 2.5 hours to Muscat.

    • Afternoon: Last shopping at Mutrah or a mall near the airport.

    • Evening: Transfer to the airport for your flight.

Allow three hours at the airport; evening flights to India are popular and queues build.

Who this Oman itinerary suits

This loop suits couples, friends and active families who are happy with two to three hours of driving most days in return for wadis, desert and mountains. It is not a resort holiday. For a slower trip, drop Ras al Jinz and spend an extra night in Muscat. More ideas are on things to do in Oman.

Self-drive or driver-guide?

The plan works either way. Self-drive in a rented 4WD is cheaper for groups of three or four, but the sand track to Wahiba camps and the Jebel Akhdar road need confidence. A driver-guide adds cost but also context, and most Indian travellers we plan for prefer it for this route.

What this plan costs

Mid-range land cost starts at about ₹52,000 per person, twin sharing, for four hotel nights, one desert camp night with dinner, a 4WD with driver-guide for days three to six, the Oman e-visa and main entry fees. With return flights, expect about ₹78,000 per person; see Oman trip cost.

When to go

October to March. From May to September the interior is too hot for wadi hikes and desert nights; check best time to visit Oman.

Never enter a wadi or drive through one after rain. Flash floods arrive fast, even under a clear sky.

Most Indian passport holders apply for an e-visa before flying; see our Oman visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6 days enough for Oman?
Six days covers Muscat, the coast wadis, the Wahiba Sands, Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar at a moderate pace. Add two days for Jebel Shams and the Balcony Walk, or a separate trip to Salalah during the Khareef season. Fewer than five days means rushing the driving.
Do I need a 4WD for this Oman route?
Yes, for two parts. The police checkpoint on the Jebel Akhdar road turns back non-4WD cars, and most Wahiba Sands camps are reached on a sand track. Muscat, the coast road and Nizwa are fine in a regular car. Camps can collect you from the desert edge if needed.
Is this Oman itinerary suitable for children?
Yes for children over about six who can manage some walking and car time. Wadi Bani Khalid's pools, the desert camp and the turtle watch are usually highlights. Wadi Shab involves rocky paths and swimming, so families with younger children may prefer to skip it.
