How to spend less without ruining the trip

  • Use Grab instead of street taxis; fares are fixed upfront and usually lower.
  • Eat in Brickfields or at mamak restaurants, where a vegetarian banana-leaf meal costs RM 10–18 (₹200–370).
  • Buy chocolates and alcohol in Langkawi's duty-free shops rather than in KL.
  • Book the KL–Langkawi flight early and check whether a checked bag is included; budget fares charge extra.
  • Avoid Chinese New Year week and the December holidays, when Langkawi resorts raise rates.
  • Skip paid decks you don't need: KLCC Park gives the classic Petronas view free.

How much does a Malaysia trip cost from India?

A 5-night Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi trip costs about ₹48,000–68,000 per person from India, twin sharing, including return flights to KL and the domestic flight to Langkawi. Visa and entry

At the time of review, Indian passport holders can visit Malaysia visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, under an exemption that runs to 31 December 2026. You still need to complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card within three days before arrival. If the exemption isn't extended into 2027, budget for an e-visa; check the Malaysia visa guide before booking.

Daily spending

Budget ₹2,000–3,500 per person per day, excluding hotel and tours, for meals, Grab rides and small shopping. A vegetarian thali or banana-leaf meal costs RM 10–18 (₹200–370) in Brickfields; a mall food-court meal RM 15–25. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some ringgit for markets, Batu Caves and night markets. A forex card gives better rates than your debit card; see our foreign exchange service.

TCS applies to overseas tour packages booked in India. It's adjustable against your income tax, so you get it back when you file your return.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Malaysia trip cost for a couple?
A 5-night Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi trip for a couple costs about ₹1.3–1.5 lakh in total from Delhi or Mumbai on a mid-range plan, including return flights, 4-star hotels, the domestic flight and the main sights. On a budget plan with 3-star hotels and shared tours, expect about ₹95,000–1.1 lakh for two.
Is Malaysia cheaper than Singapore?
Yes, noticeably. Hotels in Kuala Lumpur cost roughly half of comparable ones in Singapore, food is cheaper, and Indians currently need no visa for Malaysia. A 5-night Malaysia trip with flights starts around ₹48,000 per person, while four nights in Singapore start around ₹58,000. Many travellers combine both, with a bus or short flight between them.
How much ringgit should I carry?
For a 5-night trip with hotels and tours prepaid, load about RM 800–1,200 (₹16,000–25,000) per person on a forex card and carry RM 200–300 in cash for markets, small eateries and tips. Add more if you plan to shop at Genting's outlets or Langkawi's duty-free stores. ATMs at KLIA and in malls accept Indian forex cards.
Is a Malaysia package cheaper than booking myself?
For Langkawi, packages often win because they bundle the domestic flight, transfers and resort rates. In Kuala Lumpur, booking yourself can be cheaper if you're comfortable with Grab and the trains. The real saving in a package is time and fewer mistakes, such as missed connections at KLIA or tours booked for the wrong day.
