Quick answer

For a Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang trip, the best time is December to March, when the west coast is at its driest and the Andaman Sea is calm. June to August is a good second window. The east-coast islands work the other way round: March to September, with most resorts closed from November to February. KL itself is warm and showery all year.

Festivals and events in Malaysia

  • 22 January 2027

    Thaipusam at Batu Caves

One of the largest Thaipusam gatherings anywhere, with devotees carrying kavadi up the 272 steps. Go at dawn and expect dense crowds.

  • 6 February 2027

    Chinese New Year

Lanterns in Petaling Street and George Town, lion dances and open houses. Hotel rates in Penang rise sharply.

  • Around 10 March 2027 (end of Ramadan)

    Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Many KL residents head home, so traffic eases while some shops and eateries close for two or three days. Ramadan bazaars run in the weeks before.

  • Usually July–August, Penang

    George Town Festival

Arts, performances and street events across the George Town heritage zone.

  • Late October 2027

    Deepavali

A national holiday. Brickfields (KL's Little India) has weeks of lights, sweet stalls and festive bazaars.

When is the best time to visit Malaysia?

Malaysia has two coasts with opposite weather, which is why advice online often contradicts itself. Most Indian itineraries stick to the west, Kuala Lumpur plus Langkawi or Penang, and for that combination December to March is best. The northeast monsoon that soaks the east coast leaves the west relatively dry, and Langkawi's sea is calm and clear for island hopping.

June to August is the second-best window. Kuala Lumpur is at its least rainy, which suits the May–June Indian school holidays, though Langkawi gets more cloud and choppier water from July.

Does it rain all year in Kuala Lumpur?

Pretty much. KL gets well over 2,000 mm of rain a year, and the wettest stretches are April and October–November. The pattern is predictable: a clear, hot morning, then a thunderstorm between about 3 pm and 7 pm. Do Batu Caves, Merdeka Square and outdoor walks in the morning, and keep the Petronas Towers, Aquaria KLCC and the malls for the afternoon.

What about the east-coast islands?

The Perhentians, Redang and Tioman run on the reverse pattern. Their season is March to September; from November to February most resorts close and ferries stop. If a package offers Redang in December, ask hard questions.

Festivals that shape prices

Thaipusam at Batu Caves (22 January 2027) is one of the largest anywhere. Chinese New Year (6 February 2027) fills Penang. Hari Raya, at the end of Ramadan (around 10 March 2027), empties KL as residents head home, which means easy traffic but some closed shops. Deepavali is a national holiday, and Brickfields, KL's Little India, stays lit up for weeks.

Smoke haze from regional fires can affect visibility between July and September. It usually clears within days, but check air-quality readings if anyone in your group has asthma.

Next, compare the Malaysia trip cost, our 6-day KL and Langkawi itinerary and the current Malaysia visa rules for Indian passport holders, which may change for 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malaysia visa-free for Indians?
At the time of review, Indian passport holders can enter Malaysia visa-free for tourism for up to 30 days under an exemption that runs to 31 December 2026. You still need to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. For travel in 2027, check whether the exemption has been extended before booking.
Which is the best month for Langkawi?
January to March is the best time for Langkawi, with dry days, a calm sea for island hopping and clear water at Pantai Cenang. December is also good after the first week or two. From late August to October the southwest monsoon brings more rain and rougher water, and some boat trips get cancelled.
Is Malaysia good in May for an Indian family?
Yes. May is hot and humid with afternoon storms, but Kuala Lumpur's big draws (the Petronas Towers, Aquaria KLCC, Genting Highlands and the malls) work in any weather, and Langkawi is still decent. It's a busy month for Indian families, so book hotels and the KL–Langkawi flight early.
When should I avoid Kuala Lumpur?
There's no month to avoid entirely, but October and November are the wettest, with long thunderstorms that can disrupt outdoor plans. Chinese New Year week and the Thaipusam weekend bring heavy crowds and higher hotel prices. If haze is reported between July and September, viewpoints such as KL Tower lose much of their view.
