Quick answer
The best time to visit Bangkok is November to February, when the rain has stopped, humidity is lower and evenings are pleasant enough for river cruises and night markets. March to May is dry but very hot, often 35°C or more. June to October is the rainy season, with September the wettest month, though most sights stay open.

Festivals and events in Bangkok
6 February 2027
Chinese New Year
Yaowarat Road closes to traffic for dragon dances and food stalls. Go early evening; it gets very crowded.
13–15 April every year
Songkran
Water fights on Silom Road, Khao San Road and around CentralWorld. Many Bangkok residents leave the city, so roads are quieter.
Ninth lunar month, usually October
Vegetarian Festival (Thetsakan Kin Jay)
Yellow-flagged jay stalls in Chinatown serve food with no meat, dairy, onion or garlic, which suits Jain travellers.
25 November 2026
Loy Krathong
Floating krathongs on the Chao Phraya and in Lumphini and Benjakitti parks. River dinner cruises sell out.
31 December
New Year countdown
Fireworks at ICONSIAM and CentralWorld. Expect road closures and surge pricing on taxis.
When should you visit Bangkok?
Go between November and February. The monsoon has passed, humidity drops, and evenings are comfortable enough for a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya or a walk through Chinatown. Daytime highs still reach 31–33°C, so this is Bangkok's version of winter rather than actual cool weather. December and January are the busiest months, and Christmas–New Year is the most expensive time to book.
How hot does Bangkok get?
March to May is the hot season, and April is the peak, often 35–37°C with humidity that makes it feel hotter. Plan the Grand Palace and Wat Pho for opening time, rest in the hotel or a mall in the afternoon, and head out again after 5 pm. Carry a cap, water and a light scarf: temple dress codes need covered shoulders and knees even in the heat.
Is the rainy season a bad time to visit?
Not as bad as it sounds. From May to October, rain usually comes as a strong afternoon or evening storm lasting an hour or two, and Bangkok has plenty to do indoors: SEA LIFE Ocean World, the big malls, Safari World's covered shows, spas and food courts. Hotel rates fall and queues shrink. The month to avoid is September, when downpours can flood low-lying streets and turn a 30-minute taxi ride into 90 minutes. Use the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro instead of road transport when it rains.
Is air pollution a concern?
Sometimes. Fine-dust (PM2.5) haze can build up in Bangkok between January and March, especially on still days. Check an air-quality app before outdoor plans and carry an N95 mask if anyone in your group has asthma.
Songkran in mid-April is great fun but leaves nothing dry. If you are travelling with parents or a lot of electronics, either embrace it with waterproof pouches or avoid 13–15 April.
