Japan Travel Guide

Japan rewards travellers who like precision. Trains leave to the second, cities are immaculate, and the gap between a thousand-year-old temple and a neon intersection is often a ten-minute walk. It is also more navigable for a first-timer than its reputation suggests.

Why travellers choose Japan

The contrast is the attraction. Kyoto's temples and geisha districts and Tokyo's Shibuya crossing belong to the same country and sit two hours apart on a bullet train.

The Shinkansen makes the country feel small. Tokyo to Kyoto is under two and a half hours, and the rail pass turns a multi-city route into something genuinely simple.

Cherry blossom in spring and autumn maple colour are among the great seasonal spectacles anywhere, and they are entirely worth planning a trip around.

What not to miss in Japan

  • Tokyo — Senso-ji temple, Shibuya crossing, teamLab digital art and a day trip to Mount Fuji's fifth station.
  • Kyoto — Fushimi Inari's torii gates, Kinkaku-ji the golden pavilion, Arashiyama bamboo grove and Gion.
  • Mount Fuji and Hakone — Lake Ashi cruises, the Hakone ropeway and, on a clear day, the mountain itself.
  • Osaka — Dotonbori's food streets, Osaka Castle and Universal Studios Japan.
  • Nara — Todai-ji's great Buddha and the free-roaming deer, an easy half-day from Kyoto or Osaka.
  • Hiroshima and Miyajima — The Peace Memorial and the floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine.

When to travel

Late March to early April brings cherry blossom — spectacular, brief and heavily booked, requiring reservations several months ahead. Late November delivers autumn colour that is arguably just as beautiful and slightly easier to arrange. May and October are pleasant and less crowded. June is the rainy season; July and August are hot and humid; winter is cold but excellent for skiing and hot springs.

Entry and paperwork

Indian passport holders require a Japan tourist visa applied for in advance through an authorised agency. Requirements include a detailed day-by-day itinerary, confirmed flight and hotel bookings, and financial documents. Processing typically takes five to seven working days, and our documentation desk assembles the schedule-of-stay format the consulate expects.

Japan — frequently asked questions

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth buying?
It depends on your route more than it used to since the price increase. For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima itinerary it usually still pays; for Tokyo and Kyoto only, individual tickets are often cheaper. We calculate both.
Is the language a problem?
Less than you would expect. Signage in major cities and stations is bilingual, and translation apps work well. Outside the main tourist corridors it becomes harder, which is where a guide earns their fee.
Is vegetarian food difficult?
It requires planning — dashi, a fish-based stock, is in a great many dishes that look vegetarian. We book restaurants that reliably cater for it and provide phrase cards.
