Quick answer

The best time to visit the Philippines is January to April, the dry season, when Palawan's lagoons are calm and island-hopping boats run daily. December and May are good shoulder months. Avoid July to September, the peak of the rains and typhoon season, when ferries and boat tours are often cancelled at short notice and whole days can be lost.

When is the best time to visit the Philippines?

January to April gives you the driest weather, flat seas and reliable island-hopping in El Nido, Coron, Bohol and Cebu. The table shows Manila's long-term averages. Palawan follows a similar pattern with a little less rain in the wet months, while eastern islands such as Siargao catch rain from November to January.

Month by month

January to April: dry season

Highs of 30–34°C, calm water and good visibility for snorkelling. January is festival month (Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, Dinagyang), so Cebu and Kalibo rooms go early. March and April are the hottest, and Holy Week, 21–28 March in 2027, plus the April school break bring heavy domestic travel. Book El Nido and Coron rooms and the El Nido–Coron ferry well ahead.

May: hot and transitional

Mostly dry for the first half, then afternoon thunderstorms build. Prices start to soften, and it is still a reasonable month for beaches if you keep plans flexible.

June to October: rains and typhoons

The southwest monsoon (habagat) brings heavy rain, with July to September the peak. When a storm signal is raised, the Coast Guard suspends sailings and island tours, and domestic flights get cancelled. Hotels discount, but if you do travel, leave two buffer days before your international flight and avoid tight same-day connections.

November and December

Rain eases in Palawan from November, though late typhoons can still reach the Visayas. December is drier and festive, with Christmas lights from September and dawn masses (Simbang Gabi) from 16 to 24 December. Christmas–New Year week is the most expensive of the year.

Which months should you avoid?

July, August and September. You can still have sunny days, but a single typhoon can wipe out the boat days that are the reason most people come.

Frequently asked questions

Which month is best for El Nido and Coron?
February to April is the most reliable, with calm seas and the clearest water for lagoons and wreck snorkelling. January is also good but can be breezy. Book the El Nido–Coron fast ferry and your island tours a few days ahead in this season, because boats and rooms fill, particularly around Holy Week and the April school holidays.
Is it safe to visit the Philippines during typhoon season?
It is safe if you follow official warnings, but it is disruptive. When PAGASA raises a storm signal, ferries and island tours stop and flights may be cancelled, sometimes for two or three days. If you travel between June and October, buy travel insurance that covers delays and keep two spare days before your flight home.
Is December a good time to visit the Philippines?
Yes, December is mostly dry in Palawan and Manila, and the Christmas season is lively, with lanterns and night markets. The downside is price: Christmas to New Year is peak domestic travel, so flights and beach resorts cost the most. Early December gives you the weather without the holiday rates.
How hot does the Philippines get in April and May?
Daytime highs reach 33–35°C with high humidity, and the heat index in Manila often feels above 40°C. On the islands the sea breeze helps. Plan city sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon, carry an umbrella for shade, and drink more water than usual.
