Quick answer

Most UK visitor visa refusals for Indians come down to one test: the officer was not satisfied that you are a genuine visitor who will leave and can afford the trip. Common triggers are unexplained bank deposits, income that doesn't match the trip's cost, vague plans, weak ties to India and undisclosed past refusals. There is no appeal, so fix the stated reasons and reapply.

Key takeaways

  • Refusals cite Appendix Visitor, usually paragraph V 4.2: you must show you will leave, are visiting for a permitted purpose and can pay for the trip.
  • Unexplained large deposits and salaries that don't match bank credits are the most common financial triggers.
  • Declare every previous refusal from any country; deception can bring a refusal and a ban of up to 10 years.
  • There is no appeal for a visitor visa refusal; you reapply with a file that answers each stated reason.
  • The £135 fee (about ₹15,800) is not refunded, so a careful first application is cheaper than a second.

How does a UK officer decide?

UK visitor applications are decided on paper, usually without an interview, against Appendix Visitor of the Immigration Rules. Under paragraph V 4.2 the officer must be satisfied that you:

  • will leave the UK at the end of the visit;
  • will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits;
  • are genuinely seeking entry for a purpose the visitor route allows, such as tourism, family visits or business meetings;
  • will not do prohibited activities, such as work;
  • have enough money for all reasonable costs of the visit without working or public funds.

A third party can pay under paragraph V 4.3, but only if they have a genuine relationship with you, are lawfully in the UK if they live there, and can and will support you. Separately, suitability rules cover past immigration breaches, deception and criminality.

Because nobody interviews you, your documents must answer every one of these points by themselves. The refusal letter quotes the paragraphs and gives the officer's reasons. Read it line by line.

What are the most common refusal reasons?

ReasonWhat it looks likeHow to fix it
Unexplained deposits₹3 lakh credited a week before applyingExplain the source with proof: FD maturity, bonus, property sale; better still, don't move money in
Trip cost out of line with incomeA trip costing four months' salary and no savings historyShow savings over time, a sponsor, or plan a shorter trip
Salary doesn't match creditsEmployer letter says ₹80,000 a month; statements show ₹45,000Add payslips and Form 16 and explain deductions
Vague purposeNo plan beyond "tourism" for three monthsGive dates, cities and who you will see
Weak ties to IndiaRecently resigned, no dependants, no propertyShow the job, leave letter, business, family responsibilities
Long or repeated staysFive-month visits to children every yearExplain the pattern and keep stays reasonable
Sponsor not evidencedHost's letter without status or financesHost's passport or status, payslips, bank statements, address
Previous refusal not declaredA 2022 Schengen refusal left outDeclare every refusal and attach the letter
Past immigration breachAn overstay anywhereDeclare it, explain it, show compliance since
Doubtful documentsBookings or letters an agent suppliedUse only genuine documents you can verify

The first three, all about money, account for most refusals of Indian applicants we see. The UK visa guide covers the standard file.

Why does deception matter so much?

If the Home Office decides a document is false or a material fact was hidden, the application is refused under the suitability rules, and future applications can be refused for up to 10 years. This covers fake employment letters, edited bank statements, bookings that never existed and, most often, a previous refusal from any country left off the form. A refusal for weak finances can be fixed in a month; a deception finding follows you for years.

What does a strong file look like?

  • Six months of bank statements with salary credits and ordinary spending
  • ITR acknowledgements for two or three years, and Form 16 if salaried
  • An employer letter with designation, salary, joining date and approved leave
  • Fixed deposits, property or investments that show ties
  • An itinerary and accommodation plan (you don't need to book or pay)
  • For family visits, the host's invitation and proof of their status and address
  • Copies of earlier UK, Schengen, US and other visas

A short cover letter that explains anything unusual, such as a recent large credit or a career break, does more than a thick file.

What about family visits?

Visiting children, siblings or friends in the UK is one of the most common purposes for Indian applicants, and the host's documents carry real weight. The host should write an invitation with their full address, their relationship to you, the dates and what they will pay for, and attach proof of their UK status (British passport, settled status or visa), recent payslips and bank statements, and proof of their address, such as a council tax bill or tenancy agreement. If the host is paying, paragraph V 4.3 applies, so the evidence must show they can genuinely afford it. A parent travelling to help after a grandchild's birth should say so; it is a normal reason for a longer visit.

How long should the trip be?

A visitor visa allows up to six months per visit, but the officer judges the requested length against your life in India. A salaried applicant asking for three months raises an obvious question about leave. Ask for the dates you need and explain longer stays, such as helping with a grandchild's birth.

What should you do after a refusal?

  1. List every reason in the refusal letter.
  2. Accept that there is no appeal or administrative review for visitor refusals; only judicial review on points of law, which rarely makes sense for a holiday.
  3. Fix each reason with evidence rather than resubmitting the same file.
  4. Declare the refusal in the new application, and on later forms that ask about refusals by any country, such as Canada's.
  5. Reapply when ready. There is no waiting period.

If the letter says the officer could not verify something, lead the new application with exactly that evidence, and mention it in the cover letter's first paragraph.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appeal a UK visitor visa refusal?
No. Standard visitor visa refusals carry no right of appeal and no administrative review. The only legal challenge is judicial review on a point of law, which is costly and rarely suitable for a tourist visa. In practice, you reapply with a stronger file that answers each reason given in the refusal letter.
How soon can I reapply after a UK visa refusal?
Immediately, as there is no waiting period. But a new application with the same documents will usually meet the same result, and the £135 fee is lost each time. Reapply once you have fixed the stated reasons, for example with an explained deposit, a sponsor's documents or a clearer itinerary.
Will a UK refusal affect my Schengen or US visa?
It can, mainly through how you answer. Many visa forms, including the US DS-160 and Canada's application, ask about previous refusals, and honesty matters more than the refusal itself. A refusal for weak finances that you have since fixed is rarely decisive elsewhere. A refusal for deception is much more damaging.
Does the UK require a minimum bank balance for a visitor visa?
No fixed minimum. The rule is that you must have enough money for all reasonable costs of the visit, including return travel, without working. Officers compare the trip cost with your income, savings and commitments. A steady six-month history that comfortably covers the trip is stronger than a larger but recent balance.
Why was my UK visa refused when I had enough money?
Usually because the officer could not see where the money came from, or it did not match your declared income. A large recent deposit, cash credits, salary that differs from the employer letter, or a sponsor without evidence can all lead to refusal despite a high balance. Explain and document every unusual credit.
Is a UK refusal for deception permanent?
Not permanent, but serious. If the Home Office finds you used false documents or hid material facts, such as an earlier refusal, future applications can be refused for up to 10 years. Always declare previous refusals from any country and use only genuine documents you can personally verify.
