How to Show Funds for a Visa: Bank Statements, ITRs and Sponsors (2026)

How Indians can show funds for a tourist visa in 2026: what bank statements must show, ITRs, sponsor letters, fixed deposits, and how much balance is enough.

Quick answer

Show three to six months of bank statements with regular income and a balance that comfortably covers the trip, two to three years of ITRs, and proof of the job or business behind the money. There is rarely a fixed minimum; officers want the trip to look affordable for you. If someone else pays, add their letter, statements, ITRs and proof of your relationship.

Key takeaways

  • Officers judge affordability and consistency, not just the closing balance; a steady six-month history beats a large last-minute deposit.
  • As a working guide, ₹1–1.5 lakh per traveller beyond the prepaid package suits a 7–10 day Europe trip; Thailand asks for THB 20,000 (₹54,000) per person.
  • ITRs prove the income is real and taxed; bring two or three years of acknowledgements, plus Form 16 if salaried.
  • Sponsored travellers need the sponsor's letter, bank statements, ITRs and proof of the relationship.
  • Fixed deposits, mutual funds and property support your ties but don't replace an active bank account.

What are visa officers looking for?

Three questions sit behind every funds check:

  1. Can you afford this trip without strain, on top of your normal commitments?
  2. Is the money really yours, or genuinely available from a sponsor?
  3. Does it tell the same story as your job, your ITR and your cover letter?

None of those is "do you have ₹5 lakh". A software engineer with a ₹2 lakh balance, steady salary credits and filed ITRs often looks stronger than someone with ₹8 lakh that arrived last week.

How much is enough?

Few countries set a fixed figure for tourist visas. The UK asks only for enough to cover all reasonable costs of the visit. Some Schengen consulates publish daily reference amounts in their checklists, so read your country's list. A handful of visa-free countries set cash rules at the border: Thailand asks for THB 20,000 (₹54,000) per person or THB 40,000 (₹1,08,000) per family.

The practical method is to price the trip honestly and show that it fits:

StepExample: couple, 7 nights in Switzerland
Land costAbout ₹1.3 lakh+ per person, so ₹2.6 lakh+
Return flightsRoughly ₹55,000–80,000 per person
Spending money₹40,000–60,000 for two
Total tripRoughly ₹4–4.5 lakh

If that trip is mostly prepaid, a balance of ₹2–3 lakh with regular income behind it looks comfortable. If nothing is prepaid, the account should cover the full cost and still leave a cushion. For a 7–10 day Europe trip, ₹1–1.5 lakh per traveller beyond the prepaid package is a reasonable working guide.

What should your bank statements show?

  • Period: three months at minimum for Schengen; six months for the UK, US, Ireland and Canada. Six is the safer default everywhere.
  • Regular income: salary or business credits that match your payslips, employer letter and ITR.
  • Normal life: bills, EMIs, groceries and card payments. An account with only a balance and no activity looks like a parking place.
  • Authenticity: the bank's seal and signature, or e-statements the embassy can verify. Ireland expects certified statements.
  • Your name and account number on every page. Joint accounts with a spouse are fine; say so.

Why does "funds parking" fail?

Funds parking is borrowing money, depositing it shortly before the application and returning it afterwards. Visa officers see it constantly. A sudden credit with no matching history raises exactly the question you are trying to avoid: is this money really available to you? UK officers in particular refuse on this basis.

Large genuine credits are fine when explained: a matured fixed deposit, an annual bonus, a property sale, a gift from a parent. Add the FD closure advice, bonus letter, sale deed or the parent's statement, and mention it in your cover letter.

What do ITRs add?

ITRs show that your income is real, continuous and taxed. Bring ITR-V acknowledgements, or the full return with the computation of income, for two or three assessment years. Salaried applicants should add Form 16. If your income is below the taxable limit and you don't file, say so plainly and lean on a sponsor's documents rather than filing a return just for the visa.

How does sponsorship work?

Students, homemakers, retired parents and young first-time travellers are often sponsored. The sponsor's finances are then assessed as closely as your own would be. You need:

  • a signed sponsorship letter naming you, the trip dates and what the sponsor will pay for;
  • the sponsor's last six months of bank statements and two to three years of ITRs;
  • the sponsor's ID or passport copy;
  • proof of the relationship, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate or passports showing parents' names.

A host abroad who sponsors you should add their passport or residence permit, payslips and statements. Some countries use formal host declarations; check before the host writes an ordinary letter.

What about FDs, property and investments?

They help, mostly as evidence of roots in India. Fixed deposits, PPF, mutual funds and property papers show you have reasons to return and resources behind you. They don't replace a working bank account, because officers want to see how you live and spend. There is no need to break an FD to inflate a balance; show it as an asset instead. A credit card limit is not funds.

Who needs which documents?

  • Salaried: statements, payslips, Form 16, ITRs, leave letter.
  • Self-employed: personal and business statements, ITRs, GST returns and business registration.
  • Retired: pension statements, FDs and investments; often a child as sponsor.
  • Students and homemakers: sponsor documents plus proof of relationship.

Do you need to show funds at the border too?

Sometimes. A visa gets you to the border; the officer there can still ask how you will pay for the stay. Schengen border guards may ask for proof of funds, a return ticket and hotel bookings. Thailand's visa-free entry comes with its cash rule, and Mauritius and the Maldives can ask how you will pay. Carry a mix: an international debit or credit card, a forex card with some balance, a little cash in the local currency or US dollars, and a recent bank statement saved on your phone. Families should keep these split between two adults in case one bag goes missing.

Don't move money around in the three months before you apply. Let your account look like your life, and explain anything unusual before the officer has to ask.

At the border, carry part of your money on a forex card from our foreign exchange desk; for a full file check, see our Schengen documents checklist or ask our visa assistance team.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum bank balance for a tourist visa?
Most countries set no fixed minimum for tourist visas. Officers check that the balance and income comfortably cover the trip on top of normal commitments. As a working guide, ₹1–1.5 lakh per traveller beyond the prepaid package suits a 7–10 day Europe trip. Some visa-free countries, such as Thailand, set cash amounts at the border.
Can I show my parents' bank statements for a visa?
Yes, if your parents are sponsoring the trip. Add a signed sponsorship letter from them, their last six months of statements, two to three years of ITRs, an ID copy, and proof of the relationship such as your birth certificate. Your own statements, if you have an account, should still go in the file.
Is a fixed deposit counted as funds for a visa?
It supports your application, mainly by showing savings and roots in India, but officers also want an active bank account showing income and spending. Include the FD receipt or statement as an asset. There is no need to break it before applying; a sudden large credit from a broken FD needs explaining anyway.
How many months of bank statements are needed for a visa?
Schengen consulates typically ask for three to six months, while the UK, US, Ireland and Canada usually expect six. Six months is the safest default for every country. Statements should carry the bank's seal or be verifiable, and show your name, account number, regular income and normal spending.
What if I don't file income tax returns?
Say so plainly in the cover letter and show other evidence: salary slips, a pension statement, agricultural income records or a sponsor's ITRs. Students, homemakers and retired people on low incomes are commonly sponsored by family. Filing a return just before applying, without a history, rarely persuades an officer.
Can I deposit money in my account before applying for a visa?
You can, but a large deposit just before applying is one of the most common refusal triggers, especially for UK visas. If the money is genuinely yours, such as a matured FD, a bonus or a property sale, attach proof of the source and explain it in the cover letter. Never deposit borrowed money to inflate a balance.
