Quick answer
Tatkal is Passport Seva's fast track. You pay ₹2,500 on top of the normal fee, so a 36-page adult passport costs ₹5,000 and a 60-page one ₹6,000. Police verification moves to after issue, and the passport is usually dispatched within one to three working days of your PSK visit. Adults need proof of address and date of birth plus any three documents from the official list.
Key takeaways
- Tatkal costs ₹2,500 more than a normal application: ₹5,000 in total for a 36-page adult passport and ₹6,000 for 60 pages, per the current Passport Seva fee list.
- Police verification happens after issue, which is why first passports under Tatkal arrive in days rather than weeks.
- Adults show proof of address, proof of date of birth and any three documents from the Passport Seva list, such as Aadhaar, PAN and voter ID.
- Several categories cannot use Tatkal, including major name changes, adopted children and some minors with separated or single parents.
- For a simple renewal at the same address, a normal application is often almost as quick; Tatkal pays off mostly for first passports.
What is Tatkal and when is it worth it?
Tatkal is the fast-track option for fresh passports and reissues under Passport Seva. You don't need to prove urgency. The real difference is police verification: most first-time normal applications are verified by the police before the passport is printed, which can take weeks depending on your state. Under Tatkal, verification happens after issue, so the passport goes out in days.
For renewals at the same address, normal applications usually need no police check or only a check after issue, so dispatch is already quick. Tatkal then mainly buys an earlier appointment slot. Our passport renewal guide covers that route.
How much does Tatkal cost in 2026?
These are the current Passport Seva fees for applications in India:
| Service | Normal fee | Tatkal total |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh or reissue, 36 pages, 10 years | ₹2,500 | ₹5,000 |
| Fresh or reissue, 60 pages, 10 years | ₹3,500 | ₹6,000 |
| Minor under 18, 36 pages, 5 years or until 18 | ₹1,750 | ₹4,250 |
| Replacement of lost or damaged passport, 36 pages, 10 years | ₹5,000 | ₹7,500 |
Articles quoting ₹1,500 for a normal passport and ₹3,500 under Tatkal are using the previous fee list. Fresh applications for children aged eight and under and seniors over 60 get a 10% rebate on the basic fee. You pay online while booking the appointment.
Which documents do you need?
The official instruction booklet lists the following for an adult's fresh Tatkal application:
- Proof of present address: for example Aadhaar, a recent electricity, water, gas or postpaid phone bill, a photo bank passbook, a rent agreement or your spouse's passport.
- Proof of date of birth: for example a municipal birth certificate, school leaving or matriculation certificate, PAN card, driving licence or voter ID with the full date of birth. Anyone born on or after 1 October 2023 must use the birth certificate.
- Non-ECR proof, if you qualify, such as a Class 10 pass certificate. See ECR and non-ECR.
- Any three documents from the Tatkal list: Aadhaar, voter ID, a government, PSU or public limited company photo ID, SC, ST or OBC certificate, arms licence, pension documents, PAN card, a bank, Kisan or post office passbook, student photo ID, driving licence, birth certificate, ration card, or your last passport for a reissue.
Minors need any two from a shorter list: Aadhaar, student ID, birth certificate, ration card, PAN card, or the last passport. Bring originals plus self-attested photocopies of everything.
How do you apply, step by step?
- Log in or register on the Passport Seva portal or the mPassport Seva app.
- Fill in the form for a fresh passport or reissue and choose Tatkaal as the application type.
- Pay the fee online and book a slot at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK in your jurisdiction. Tatkal slots are limited; if none appear, check again at different times of day.
- Attend with originals and copies. Counters check documents, capture your photo and fingerprints, and a granting officer approves the file.
- Track dispatch on the portal and wait for Speed Post. Be reachable for the police visit that follows.
How fast is Tatkal really?
The Passport Seva booklet sets these dispatch targets:
| Case | Expected dispatch |
|---|---|
| No police verification needed | Within one working day after submission |
| Police verification after issue | On the third working day after submission |
| Verification needed before issue | Within three working days of a clear police report |
Add one to three days for Speed Post in the metros, longer elsewhere. In practice most applicants in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru hold the passport within a week of the appointment. Complex cases, such as doubtful documents, can still take around 30 days.
Where do you apply: PSK or Post Office PSK?
Every regional passport office runs Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) in larger cities and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) at selected head post offices, often within an hour of smaller towns. Both handle Tatkal and normal applications, follow the same process and charge the same fees. POPSKs usually have fewer daily slots but shorter queues, so they are worth checking when city PSKs show no Tatkal dates. You must book within the jurisdiction of your present address; Delhi residents, for example, choose among the PSKs and POPSKs under the Regional Passport Office, Delhi.
Reach the centre 15 minutes before your slot with the appointment receipt, not hours early. Entry is by time slot and the queue inside moves in stages.
Who can't use Tatkal?
The document list rules out Tatkal for several groups, including:
- Citizens by registration or naturalisation
- Major changes of name, and changes to a parent's name
- Children adopted by Indian parents, and minors whose parents are separated but not divorced
- A single parent applying for a child born outside marriage, and minors where one parent has died
- Fresh applicants resident in Nagaland, and in Jammu and Kashmir, who need verification first
Passports lost or damaged beyond recognition go through extra checks. The booklet's document list marks that replacement as outside Tatkal even though Tatkal replacement fees are listed, so confirm your case on the portal before paying the higher fee.
What goes wrong?
- Address changes. If your present address differs from your old passport, police verification may happen before issue.
- No appointment. The fee is paid, but the slot is a week away. The slot, not the scheme, decides your timeline.
- Visa dates booked too early. VFS and embassies need the passport in hand, so don't book a visa appointment until it arrives.
- Touts. The only charge is the official fee. Nobody outside the PSK can speed up a file.
Check every family member's passport expiry a year before big trips. Renewing four adults at the normal fee costs ₹10,000; under Tatkal it is ₹20,000.
