Quick answer
₹1 lakh per couple, flights included, comfortably covers a 5-night honeymoon in Kashmir, Kerala, Andaman, Sikkim or Goa, and a 4–5 night trip to Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka or Dubai if you book flights six to eight weeks ahead and avoid peak weeks. Bhutan and a Maldives local island are possible but tight; Bali, Mauritius and Europe do not fit.
Key takeaways
- Within India, ₹1 lakh per couple buys five or six nights with flights and a good 3★ or 4★ hotel, with money left for a houseboat night or a pool villa.
- Abroad, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Dubai fit at four or five nights; the airfare is usually 40–50% of the total.
- Avoid 20 December to 5 January and Diwali week, when the same trip can cost a third more.
- Add visa fees, 2% TCS on overseas packages and travel insurance before comparing quotes.
What does ₹1 lakh per couple actually buy?
₹1 lakh for two people is ₹50,000 each, and the return flight takes the first ₹8,000–30,000 of that. What is left pays for a 3★ or good 4★ hotel with breakfast, transfers and some sightseeing. Within India that is a comfortable budget for five or six nights. Abroad, it covers four or five nights in short-haul countries, provided you avoid peak weeks.
The totals below are for two people, twin sharing, with return economy flights from Delhi unless stated. They assume booking six to eight weeks ahead, outside 20 December–5 January and Diwali week.
| Destination | Nights | Return flight per person | Total per couple | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Goa | 4 | ₹7,000–12,000 | ₹40,000–55,000 | Easy, with room to upgrade |
| Kashmir | 5 | ₹8,000–14,000 | ₹55,000–70,000 | Comfortable |

| Nepal | 5 | ₹10,000–18,000 | ₹56,000–75,000 | Comfortable |
| Andaman | 5 | ₹12,000–20,000 | ₹70,000–90,000 | Fits; book ferries early |
| Sri Lanka | 5 | ₹10,000–18,000 (from Chennai) | ₹75,000–95,000 | Fits from the south; tight from Delhi |
| Thailand (Krabi or Phuket) | 5 | ₹18,000–28,000 | ₹80,000–1 lakh | Fits outside peak weeks |
| Dubai | 4 | ₹16,000–30,000 | ₹84,000–1 lakh | Fits, visa included, if dates are flexible |
| Bhutan (via Bagdogra) | 5 | ₹9,000–16,000 | ₹90,000–1 lakh | Tight; shared vehicle |

Which international honeymoons fit under ₹1 lakh?
Thailand: the safest bet
Krabi (Ao Nang or Railay) and Phuket (Kata or Karon rather than Patong) give you beaches, island day trips and good food at prices that still fit. Indians get 30 days visa-free with a free online arrival card, so there is no visa cost. Land costs are low enough that the flight decides whether you finish at ₹80,000 or ₹1 lakh, so fly into Phuket directly where you can and see the Thailand trip cost for the full split. Pick one shared speedboat day to Phi Phi rather than a private boat, and eat at local restaurants rather than in the hotel.
Nepal: the easiest
Indians need no visa for Nepal, only a passport or voter ID, and Indian rupees are accepted widely in ₹100 notes. Two nights in Kathmandu and three in Pokhara, with a lake-view room and a sunrise at Sarangkot, comes in well under budget; the Nepal trip cost starts around ₹28,000 per person. Spend the leftover on the short Pokhara–Kathmandu flight instead of a six- to eight-hour drive. October–November and March–April are the clearest months.
Sri Lanka: best from south India
From Chennai, Bengaluru or Kochi the flights are short and cheap, which leaves room for a private car and driver, the standard and most practical way for a couple to get around. A five-night loop of Kandy, Ella or Nuwara Eliya and a beach at Bentota or Galle fits. The Sri Lanka ETA is free for Indians at the time of review. From Delhi, fares of ₹20,000–32,000 make it tight.
Dubai: a city honeymoon, if you pick dates well
Dubai packages with flights and visa start around ₹42,000 per person in low-fare weeks; the Dubai trip cost shows what that includes. October–November and February–March are pleasant; summer is cheaper but 40 °C or more by day. Spend the margin on a desert dinner or a Marina dhow cruise rather than on a sunset slot at the Burj Khalifa, which is priced higher than daytime tickets.
Bhutan and the Maldives: possible, but tight
Bhutan by road from Bagdogra via Phuentsholing fits only with a shared vehicle or simpler hotels, because the Sustainable Development Fee adds ₹1,200 per person per night. A private car for two pushes it past ₹1 lakh; see the Bhutan trip cost. The Maldives fits only on a local island such as Maafushi, Thoddoo or Dhigurah, in a guesthouse. Know the rules first: no alcohol on local islands, and swimwear only on the designated tourist beaches. The Maldives trip cost page shows what a resort would add.
Which Indian honeymoons leave room to spare?
Indian destinations give you the most comfort for the money. Use the margin well:
- Kashmir: a deluxe houseboat night on Dal Lake and both phases of the Gulmarg gondola. The Kashmir trip cost starts around ₹17,000 per person, land only.
- Kerala: a private overnight houseboat with an air-conditioned bedroom, and a couple's Ayurveda session in Munnar or Kovalam.
- Andaman: a beach-facing cottage on Havelock and a try dive. Check the best time to visit Andaman first; the sea is rough from late May.
- Goa: a private-pool villa in South Goa instead of a standard room in the north.
- Himachal: an overnight Volvo from Delhi to Manali saves the airfare and pays for a cottage in Old Manali or Naggar.
Where does a ₹1 lakh budget leak?
- Peak-week flights. The same Delhi–Phuket return can double over Christmas.
- Transfers. Island speedboats in the Maldives and inter-island ferries in Andaman are priced per person, per sector.
- Resort meals. One dinner at a beach resort can cost what a whole day of eating out costs in town.
- Visas. About ₹6,500–9,000 per person for Dubai and about ₹2,700 per person for Indonesia; Thailand, Nepal and Sri Lanka cost nothing at the time of review.
- TCS and card charges. Overseas packages attract 2% TCS, which you can adjust against your income tax when you file. Always pay card bills in the local currency, never in rupees at the terminal.
Fix the flights before the land package. A ₹6,000 difference in fare per person is ₹12,000 per couple, which is a houseboat night or a resort upgrade.
Why don't Bali, Mauritius or Europe fit?
Bali's return flights usually cost ₹28,000–40,000 per person and six nights on the ground starts around ₹32,000 per person, so a couple spends ₹1.25 lakh or more even in a good week. Mauritius starts around ₹1.7 lakh per couple with flights. In Europe, the Schengen visa alone costs about ₹11,000–12,000 per person with service charges, and flights usually exceed ₹50,000 each.
