Quick answer

Five days in Lakshadweep works best from a single base on Agatti: fly in from Kochi on day one, snorkel and dive the lagoon on day two, spend day three on Bangaram and Thinnakara, fish or kayak on day four, and fly out on day five. Apply for the entry permit at least 14 days ahead. Mid-range land costs start around ₹40,000 per person.

Day-by-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Fly into Agatti

    • Morning: Flight from Kochi to Agatti, about 1.5 hours on a small turboprop; permit and ID check on arrival.

    • Afternoon: Check in, lunch and an easy swim in the lagoon.

    • Evening: Sunset on the beach and dinner at your resort.

    Stay: Agatti

Baggage allowances on small aircraft can be lower than usual; check your ticket and pack light.

  2. 2

    Day 2

    Lagoon day

    • Morning: A guided snorkelling trip by boat to the reef edge.

    • Afternoon: A try dive with a certified instructor, or kayaking and a glass-bottom boat ride.

    • Evening: A walk through the village and coconut groves, dressed modestly.

    Stay: Agatti

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Bangaram and Thinnakara

    • Morning: Boat to Bangaram, an hour or more depending on the sea and the boat.

    • Afternoon: Swimming, snorkelling and lunch on Bangaram, then on to Thinnakara's lagoon.

    • Evening: Return to Agatti by late afternoon, or stay overnight in a beach tent if your package and permit include it.

    Stay: Agatti (or Bangaram/Thinnakara)

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Fishing and free time

    • Morning: Deep-sea fishing with a local crew; the kitchen can cook your catch.

    • Afternoon: Rest, read and swim, or a second dive if you're hooked.

    • Evening: Last sunset and a beach dinner.

    Stay: Agatti

  5. 5

    Day 5

    Fly out

    • Morning: Breakfast and a final swim.

    • Afternoon: Return flight to Kochi; timings vary by season.

    • Evening: Connect onwards, or spend the night in Kochi.

Avoid same-day onward flights from Kochi that leave within three hours of landing.

Why base yourself on Agatti?

Agatti has the islands' only airport, a handful of resorts and guesthouses, and boat links to Bangaram and Thinnakara. Staying on one island for all four nights avoids inter-island transfers, which depend on weather and boat availability. If you want Kadmat, Kavaratti or Minicoy too, plan six or seven nights and accept longer transfers.

What do you need before you go?

  • Permit: apply on the Lakshadweep e-permit portal at least 14 days before travel, listing Agatti, Bangaram, Thinnakara and any other island. Since April 2026, tourists don't need a local sponsor or police clearance certificate.
  • Flights: Kochi–Agatti seats are limited; book once the permit is approved.
  • Cash: carry enough, as ATMs can run dry.
  • Insurance: worth having, given the single air link.

What does it cost?

Mid-range land costs start at about ₹40,000 per person on twin sharing, covering a beach resort with meals, permit fees, transfers on Agatti, the Bangaram day trip and a snorkelling session. Flights to Kochi and on to Agatti are extra.

Leave a free day in Kochi before or after. If the Agatti flight is cancelled, you'll have room to rebook without losing a connection or a working day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Lakshadweep by ship instead of flying?
Passenger ships run from Kochi to the islands and take roughly 14–20 hours, but tickets are limited and islanders get priority, so they're hard for tourists to book independently. Ship-based tour packages run in some seasons. For a short trip, flying to Agatti is far more reliable.
Is five days too long for Lakshadweep?
Not if you enjoy the water. Five days gives you two or three full days of snorkelling, diving and island trips, plus a buffer for weather. If you don't swim and aren't interested in trying, four days is enough. There's no nightlife or shopping, so the pace is slow by design.
Do I need to book Lakshadweep through a tour operator?
It isn't mandatory, but it's much easier. Operators and resorts usually file the permit, coordinate the Agatti flight, airport transfers, boat trips and meals, and know which islands are currently open to tourists. Booking independently is possible, but every piece, especially the permit's island list, must line up.
