Quick answer

The best things to do in Lakshadweep are snorkelling and try dives in the Agatti and Kadmat lagoons, a boat day trip to Bangaram and Thinnakara, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides over coral, deep-sea fishing with local crews, and quiet village walks. It's a water-and-reef destination with little conventional sightseeing; four nights is plenty for most travellers.

What kind of trip is Lakshadweep?

Slow and simple. There are no malls, no nightlife and only basic shops; days revolve around the lagoon, meals and sunsets. Of the 36 islands, about ten are inhabited, and you can visit only those named on your permit. Agatti, which has the only airport, is where most short trips are based, with day trips to Bangaram and Thinnakara. Expect simple, comfortable rooms and home-style food rather than Maldives-style luxury.

How good is the snorkelling and diving?

Very good by Indian standards. The lagoons are shallow, sheltered and warm, and reef fish, turtles and rays are common. The corals have been hit by bleaching events, as on many Indian Ocean reefs, so some patches are damaged while others are recovering. Visibility is best from about February to April.

What are the rules for visitors?

  • Permit: apply on the e-permit portal at least 14 days before travel; your island list is binding.
  • Alcohol: the islands are largely dry; historically, only Bangaram has been licensed to serve it.
  • Dress: this is a conservative, almost entirely Muslim community. Swimwear is fine at resort beaches and in the lagoon, but cover up in villages.
  • Environment: don't touch coral, collect shells or feed fish, and take your plastic back with you.

Carry enough cash. ATMs exist on the larger islands but can run dry, and card acceptance outside resorts is patchy.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-swimmers enjoy Lakshadweep?
Yes. Try dives are designed for non-swimmers, with an instructor holding you throughout. Snorkelling in the shallow lagoons is done with life jackets, and kayaks and glass-bottom boats need no swimming at all. The water is calm from October to mid-May, which makes Lakshadweep one of the gentlest places in India to try the sea.
Is alcohol available in Lakshadweep?
Lakshadweep is largely dry. Historically, alcohol has been served only at the resort on Bangaram island, and policy has been under discussion in recent years. Don't carry alcohol in your luggage, and check the current rules with your resort before you travel if it matters to you.
Which islands can tourists visit in Lakshadweep?
Domestic tourists usually visit Agatti, Bangaram, Thinnakara, Kadmat and Kavaratti, with Minicoy and Kalpeni on some longer packages. You can only visit the islands named on your entry permit, so decide your route first and list every island, including transit points, in the application.
Is Lakshadweep better than the Maldives?
It's different. Lakshadweep has similar lagoons and reefs, needs no passport and is fewer hours from Kochi, but has far fewer hotels, simpler service, one main airport and a permit process. The Maldives offers luxury resorts, more flights and alcohol. Choose Lakshadweep for an unpolished, quiet island trip.
