Quick answer

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, runs from 6 to 30 August 2027, its 80th edition. Thousands of comedy, theatre and music shows play in venues across the city, many of them free. Book accommodation six to nine months ahead because rooms can cost three times normal, apply early for a UK visa, and allow at least three full days.

Highlights

  • More than 3,000 comedy, theatre, music and cabaret shows
  • Street performers along the Royal Mile
  • Hundreds of free, pay-what-you-like shows
  • The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the castle
  • The Edinburgh International Festival and Book Festival in the same month

What actually happens

The Fringe is the world's largest arts festival, and anyone can put on a show. For about three and a half weeks every August, more than 3,000 shows, from comedy and theatre to cabaret, music, dance and children's shows, play in theatres, pubs, churches, university halls and pop-up tents across Edinburgh. The Royal Mile becomes a stage for street performers and actors handing out flyers. The 2027 Fringe, its 80th edition, runs from 6 to 30 August.

August also brings the Edinburgh International Festival, an invited programme of opera, classical music, theatre and dance; the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the castle esplanade, which sells out months ahead; and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Choosing shows and what they cost

Most shows run about an hour. Tickets typically cost £8–20 (about ₹940–2,340), with big-name comedians charging more. There are hundreds of free shows too, where you pay what you like into a bucket at the exit; £5–10 is fair. Browse the programme on the Fringe website or app, book a few anchors and leave room for word-of-mouth picks. Preview shows in the first days are cheaper, and the middle weekends are the busiest.

Where to stay and how early to book

Edinburgh's hotel rates roughly triple in August: a basic double can cost £200–400 (about ₹23,400–46,800) a night. Book six to nine months ahead. University rooms let out for the summer are cheaper, and Glasgow, about 50 minutes away by train, is a common base.

Visa, crowds and what to wear

Indian passport holders need a UK Standard Visitor visa. Apply about three months before travel, as summer is peak season at the visa centres; see our UK visa guide. The Old Town is crowded and steep, with cobbles everywhere. August is 14–19°C and often wet, so carry layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes. Edinburgh is easy for vegetarians, with plenty of Indian restaurants.

Etiquette and photography

Do not photograph or film inside shows. Street performers are happy to be photographed; tip if you stay for the whole act.

Combining it

Add three or four days in the Highlands for Loch Ness, Glencoe and Skye, or take the train to London, about four and a half hours. See things to do in the United Kingdom, the best time to visit the UK, our August ideas and tour packages.
