Quick answer

For a short hill break, Kasauli or Chail are under three hours away; for snow, Narkanda in January; for adventure, paragliding at Bir Billing or the Triund trek from McLeodganj; for a spiritual weekend, Amritsar or Anandpur Sahib. Leave before 6 am on Saturday to avoid the Zirakpur and Parwanoo jams, and head back early on Sunday.

14 weekend trips from Chandigarh

  1. Ranges never end1

    Kasauli

60 km · 1.5–2 h via Zirakpur, Parwanoo and Dharampur; nearest station KalkaYear-round, except heavy-rain weeksCouples, quiet walks, quick escape

Close enough to leave after breakfast on Saturday: walk the Upper Mall, the Gilbert Trail and the Christ Church area, then pick out Chandigarh's lights from the ridge at night. Book a cottage on the Kasauli–Garkhal road. Weekend parking in Kasauli is scarce, so leave the car at your hotel and walk.

  2. Barog railway station2

    Dagshai & Barog

65 km · 1.5–2 h via Parwanoo and Dharampur; the Kalka–Shimla toy train stops at BarogMarch–June and September–DecemberLesser-known heritage, toy train

Visit the Dagshai jail museum, a 19th-century British prison inside one of the oldest cantonments in the hills, where Mahatma Gandhi is said to have stayed. At Barog, ride the toy train through the longest tunnel on the Kalka–Shimla line and have tea at the station. Hotels in Barog and Solan are good value; carry ID for the cantonment.

  3. The Palace, having a lawn, bar, dining room and other modern amenities is a place worth visit near Shimla3

    Chail

105 km · 3 h via Solan and Kandaghat; no trainMarch–June and September–FebruaryQuiet hill break, heritage palace

Stay at the Chail Palace, a former summer retreat of the Maharaja of Patiala now run by HPTDC, walk up to the Kali Tibba temple and see the cricket ground, said to be among the highest in the world. Deodar forests and the wildlife sanctuary make for easy walks. It gets far fewer visitors than Shimla, about 45 km away.

  4. The Ridge Shimla4

    Shimla

    115 km · 3–3.5 h via NH-5; Kalka–Shimla toy train (5–6 h) from Kalka, about 30 km from ChandigarhMarch–June; December–February for snowFamilies, toy train, snow

Take the toy train up from Kalka for the views and the 100-odd tunnels, then walk the Ridge, Mall Road and up to Jakhu temple. Stay near the Mall only if you are happy to walk; drivers do better in Chhota Shimla or Shoghi. Snow days can close roads above Shimla and leave the town short of water and parking.

    Plan Shimla
  5. Narkanda as seen from on the way to Hatu Peak.5

    Narkanda & Hatu Peak

175 km · 5 h via Shimla on NH-5; no trainDecember–February for snow; April–October for orchardsSnow, apple orchards, beginner skiing

Drive up to Hatu Peak, at about 3,400 m, for the Hatu Mata temple and Himalayan views, then stay in Narkanda or an apple-orchard homestay at Kotgarh or Thanedar. In January and February, the slopes host beginner skiing when there is enough snow. Snowfall can block the road beyond Shimla, so carry chains or hire a local driver.

  6. Tikkar Taal, Morni Hills, District Panchkula, Haryana, India6

    Morni Hills

45 km · 1.5 h via Panchkula; no trainYear-round; best October–MarchQuick escape, families, lake picnics

Haryana's only hill station is a short drive from Panchkula: boat on Tikkar Taal, walk the forest trails and visit the old Morni fort. A few resorts and a Haryana Tourism property make it a relaxed one-night trip. The road is narrow and winding, so avoid it after dark in winter fog.

  7. Renuka Lake,district Sirmaur , Himachal Pradesh, India7

    Renuka Ji & Paonta Sahib

130 km · 3–3.5 h via Naraingarh and Nahan; no trainOctober–March; Renuka fair in NovemberLesser-known lake, spiritual trips

Renuka Lake, the largest natural lake in Himachal, has a lakeside walk, boating and a small zoo, with the Renuka temple at its edge. Drive on to Gurdwara Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna, where Guru Gobind Singh spent several years. HPTDC's lakeside hotel is the obvious stay, and Nahan town is a quiet alternative.

  8. Khalsa Heritage Memorial Complex, Anandpur Sahib.8

    Anandpur Sahib & Naina Devi

85 km · 2 h via Ropar and Kiratpur; trains to Anandpur Sahib on the Una lineOctober–March; Hola Mohalla in MarchSpiritual trips, history, families

Visit Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib and spend half a day at Virasat-e-Khalsa, a museum of Sikh history in a striking modern building (check its weekly closing day). Then drive about 20 km to the hilltop Naina Devi temple, with a ropeway for the last stretch. Hola Mohalla brings huge crowds and martial displays by Nihang Sikhs.

  9. Snow-clad Dhauladhar range shining under evening alpenglow above the town of Dharamshala in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh .9

    Dharamshala & McLeodganj

240 km · 5.5–6 h via Ropar and Una; overnight HRTC Volvo, or Vande Bharat to Amb Andaura at the time of review, then about 2.5 hMarch–June and September–DecemberTrekkers, Tibetan culture, cafés

Walk the Triund trek (about 9 km each way from McLeodganj, steep in the last stretch), visit the Tsuglagkhang complex and the Tibet Museum, and see the HPCA cricket stadium. Stay in McLeodganj for cafés or in quieter Dharamkot. Temple Road and Jogiwara Road are single-lane and jam on weekends, so walk rather than drive in McLeodganj.

    Plan Dharamshala & McLeodganj
  10. Paragliding at Bir, HP10

    Bir Billing

270 km · 6–6.5 h via Hamirpur and Palampur; overnight HRTC buses to BaijnathOctober–November and March–MayParagliding, monasteries, backpackers

Fly tandem from the Billing take-off at about 2,400 m and land among the cafés and monasteries of Bir's Tibetan colony; flying is suspended in the monsoon, roughly mid-July to mid-September. Spend the second day at Sherab Ling monastery or the Palampur tea gardens. Check that your pilot and operator are registered with Himachal's tourism department.

  11. Upper station, Solang Ropeway in Solang valley, near Palchan, Kullu district.11

    Manali

300 km · 7–8 h via the Kiratpur–Ner Chowk four-lane and the Aut tunnel; overnight HRTC and private Volvos (8–9 h)March–June; December–February for snowSnow, adventure, groups

Spend a day at Solang Valley for snow or adventure sports and another in Old Manali and Vashisht, then drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu if the road is open. Old Manali and the Naggar road are calmer stays than the Mall. The Mandi–Kullu highway has seen major flood and landslide damage in recent monsoons, so check road status before you go.

    Plan Manali
  12. The Parvati river flowing in sweeping meanders. Kasol, Himachal Pradesh12

    Kasol & Parvati Valley

275 km · 7–7.5 h via Mandi and Bhuntar; overnight Volvo to Bhuntar, then 1 hMarch–June and September–NovemberBackpackers, Kheerganga trek, riverside cafés

Use Kasol as a base for Chalal and Tosh, and trek to Kheerganga (about 12 km from Barshaini) for the hot spring at the top. Stay in a guesthouse beside the Parvati rather than on the main road. Police run regular drug checks here, and the NDPS Act carries strict penalties; the river is also far too fast to swim in.

  13. Hamandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib (also known as the Golden Temple). The holiest shrine in Sikhism located in the city of Amritsar, India.13

    Amritsar

230 km · 4–4.5 h via Ludhiana and Jalandhar; intercity trains (4.5–5 h)October–MarchSpiritual trips, food, history

Spend Saturday evening at the Golden Temple for the Palki Sahib ceremony, eat kulcha at a dhaba nearby and walk through Jallianwala Bagh. Sunday morning suits the Partition Museum before the drive to the Attari border ceremony, which needs 1.5–2 hours of queuing on weekends. Hotels around Heritage Street are within walking distance of the temple.

    Plan Amritsar
  14. View of gates of dam14

    Pong Dam (Maharana Pratap Sagar)

    220 km · 4.5–5 h via Hoshiarpur and Talwara; no direct trainNovember–MarchBirding, lesser-known lake

This large reservoir on the Beas is a Ramsar wetland, where bar-headed geese and other migratory birds gather in winter; Nagrota Surian and Guglara are good viewing points. Stays are limited to a few forest rest houses and lodges, so book ahead or base yourself in Kangra or Dharamshala. Bring binoculars, as the birds are often far out on the water.

How do you beat the weekend traffic out of Chandigarh?

The Tricity's two big pinch points are Zirakpur, where the Delhi, Kalka and Patiala roads meet, and Parwanoo, where every Himachal-bound car funnels into the hills. On Friday evenings, Panchkula to Parwanoo can take over an hour. Leave before 6 am on Saturday, or after 9 pm on Friday if you are only going as far as Kasauli or Barog. For Manali and Kasol, the Kharar–Ropar–Kiratpur route avoids Parwanoo entirely. Coming back on Sunday, clear Dharampur or Kiratpur by 2 pm.

Toy train, bus or drive?

The Kalka–Shimla toy train is a reason to travel in itself, though it is slower than the road; book seats on IRCTC and pick a morning departure. HRTC and private Volvos run overnight to Manali, Dharamshala and Bhuntar and are the easiest way to gain a full Saturday. Drive for Chail, Narkanda, Morni and Renuka, where public transport is thin.

What does a two-night weekend cost?

Trip2 nights, per person (twin sharing)

Manali or Dharamshala by Volvo, 3-star₹6,500+
Bir Billing with one tandem flight₹7,500+

Starting land costs only; snow weekends and long weekends cost more. See our weekend getaway packages.

Long weekends worth planning around

Republic Day falls on a Tuesday in 2027, so one day of leave gives four days for Manali or Narkanda's snow. Good Friday (26 March) is a good time for Bir before the summer rush. Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti fall on weekends. Lohri and Baisakhi are big local festivals, so check whether your office gives the day. The full list is in our 2027 long weekends guide.

Monsoon safety on Himachal roads

From July to mid-September, landslides and flash floods hit the Kalka–Shimla highway, the Mandi–Kullu stretch and the Parvati valley almost every year. Check Himachal's disaster-management updates and IMD alerts the night before, never drive after dark, avoid parking near rivers or below cut slopes, and keep a spare day. Our Shimla seasonal guide and where to stay in Manali help with timing and bases.

Frequently asked questions

Which hill station is closest to Chandigarh?
Morni Hills in Haryana is about 45 km away and Kasauli about 60 km, both under two hours by road. Barog, Dagshai and Solan are at similar distances on the Shimla road. For a proper mountain feel, Chail and Shimla are three to three and a half hours away.
Where can I see snow near Chandigarh on a weekend?
Narkanda and Hatu Peak, about five hours away, and Kufri near Shimla usually get snow between late December and February. Solang Valley near Manali is more reliable but further. Snowfall varies from year to year, so check forecasts and road status, and use chains or a local driver on icy days.
Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train worth it?
Yes, at least one way. The UNESCO-listed line takes five to six hours for about 96 km, through more than 100 tunnels and over arched stone bridges, with stops at Barog and Dharampur. Book on IRCTC ahead for weekends, carry snacks, and take the road back if you are short of time.
Can I go to Manali for a weekend from Chandigarh?
Yes, with an overnight Volvo on Friday and another back on Sunday night, which gives you two full days. Driving takes seven to eight hours each way on the four-lane and Aut tunnel route. Check monsoon and winter road advisories, as the Mandi–Kullu highway can close during heavy rain or snow.
Which weekend trips from Chandigarh suit older parents?
Shimla by toy train, Chail with its palace hotel, Amritsar's Golden Temple and Anandpur Sahib all involve little walking on steep ground, and Renuka Lake is flat and quiet. Avoid Triund, Kheerganga and Hatu Peak in snow if anyone has knee or breathing problems.
