Why Kolkata weekends start at the station

More than most metros, Kolkata does its weekends by rail. Howrah and Sealdah have trains to Digha, Bolpur, Bishnupur, Jhargram, Ghatshila and Murshidabad in two to four hours, and overnight or Vande Bharat services to Puri and New Jalpaiguri. Book on IRCTC the moment the reservation window opens before long weekends; Friday-evening and Sunday-evening seats go first.

How do you beat Friday traffic on the road?

The main crawl points are Vidyasagar Setu and the Kona Expressway, the NH-16 stretch to Kolaghat, and the Dakshineswar approach for NH-19. Leave by 5.30 am on Saturday, use the Second Hooghly Bridge rather than Howrah Bridge, and be back before 4 pm on Sunday. For Digha and Mandarmani, the Kolaghat stretch moves quickly at dawn and crawls by mid-morning.

What does a two-night weekend cost?

Long weekends worth planning around

Durga Puja is the year's biggest break, but it is also when most people want to be in the city; many families travel just after Dashami. Republic Day 2027 falls on a Tuesday and Good Friday on 26 March, and both suit Darjeeling or the Dooars. Poush Mela and Christmas week fill Shantiniketan and Bishnupur. The full calendar is in our 2027 long weekends guide.

Monsoon and cyclone safety

Between June and September, landslides regularly cut the roads to Darjeeling and Sikkim; check district updates and avoid driving the hills after dark. On the coast, cyclone warnings close beaches and suspend Sundarbans boats, mostly in May and from October to November. Follow IMD alerts and keep a buffer day. Frequently asked questions

Which is the best weekend getaway from Kolkata in winter?
December to February suits almost everything: the Sundarbans by boat, Shantiniketan's Poush Mela, Bishnupur's terracotta temples, the Purulia hills and the Mandarmani–Tajpur beaches. Darjeeling is cold but clear in December, with good Kanchenjunga views. Book Christmas and New Year weekends well ahead.
How many days do you need for the Sundarbans from Kolkata?
Two nights is the sensible minimum. The road to Godkhali or Sonakhali takes about three hours, and the boat needs most of a day to reach the main watchtowers. Most packages run Saturday to Monday or Friday to Sunday, with meals and permits included.
Is Darjeeling possible as a weekend trip from Kolkata?
Yes, with an overnight train each way: leave on Friday night, reach New Jalpaiguri on Saturday morning, drive up in about three hours, and come back on Sunday's night train. A one-hour flight to Bagdogra gives you more time but costs more. A three-night long weekend is far more comfortable.
Which beach near Kolkata is less crowded than Digha?
Tajpur is the quietest, with a handful of resorts and a long, empty beach. Mandarmani has more hotels but is still calmer than Digha on most weekends. Bakkhali, south of Kolkata, is another option, though its beach is plainer. Do not drive on any beach; it is unsafe and has caused deaths.
What is the cheapest weekend trip from Kolkata?
Shantiniketan, Bishnupur, Ghatshila or Jhargram by train, with a simple hotel, can cost about ₹4,000 per person for two nights including food. Train fares on these routes are low, and the towns have inexpensive local transport and home-style Bengali meals.
