How to plan your days in Darjeeling

Darjeeling is compact but steep, and its roads jam easily. Split it this way:

  • Dawn: Tiger Hill, then Ghum monastery and Batasia Loop on the way back.
  • Town on foot: Chowrasta, the Mall, Observatory Hill, Glenary's and Keventer's.
  • North Point side: HMI and the zoo, the Tibetan centre and the ropeway.
  • South and east: Happy Valley and the Peace Pagoda.

Is the toy train worth it?

For most visitors, the joyride is the right choice: two hours from Darjeeling to Ghum and back, with stops at Batasia Loop and the railway museum. The full run from New Jalpaiguri takes seven hours or more, and only rail enthusiasts tend to enjoy it end to end. Fares in 2026 run from about ₹800 for a diesel joyride to about ₹1,300 for steam; book on IRCTC.

Practical tips

  • Tiger Hill is busy from October to December. Go with a driver who knows where to park, and walk the last stretch.
  • Most hotels are on steep lanes without car access. Pack in a soft bag that you can carry up steps.
  • Evenings are cold even in May. Carry a fleece and a light down jacket.

Darjeeling and Gangtok are 4–5 hours apart by road. Many trips do both; see things to do in Sikkim.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tiger Hill worth waking up at 4 am for?
On a clear morning, yes. Watching Kanchenjunga change colour at sunrise is the highlight of most Darjeeling trips. October to December gives the best odds. In the monsoon or on hazy days you may see nothing, so check the sky the night before and keep it flexible.
How much does the Darjeeling toy train joyride cost?
In 2026, joyrides cost about ₹800 for a diesel train and about ₹1,300 for steam, per person. The round trip to Ghum takes about two hours with stops at Batasia Loop and the Ghum museum. Book on IRCTC, ideally a few weeks ahead for weekends and holidays.
How many days are enough for Darjeeling?
Three full days cover Tiger Hill, the toy train, the HMI and zoo, a tea estate and the town. A fourth day allows a trip to Kalimpong or Mirik and a buffer for a cloudy sunrise. Combine with Gangtok for a week in the region.
