What actually happens
JLF is one of the world's largest literary festivals. Over five days, a few hundred speakers, from novelists and poets to historians, journalists, economists and the occasional film star, appear in conversations and panels across several venues within the hotel grounds, roughly from 10 am to 7 pm. Sessions run in English, Hindi and other Indian languages, and the festival bookshop hosts signings after the big sessions. In the evenings, the Jaipur Music Stage hosts concerts, ticketed separately, and Jaipur BookMark, a publishing conclave, runs alongside for the trade.
Registration and passes
General entry requires online registration with a daily fee, a few hundred rupees at the time of review. Register before you arrive to skip the counter queue. Delegate packages, which add a lounge, meals and evening events, cost much more and sell out. The programme is usually published a few weeks before the festival.
The best days to go
Weekdays are noticeably calmer than the weekend. Star sessions on the front lawn fill 30–45 minutes early, so pick two or three must-see talks a day and drift between the smaller venues for the rest. Two or three days is enough for most people.
Where to stay and how early to book
January is peak season in Jaipur, with weddings and winter tourists. Mid-range hotels cost ₹4,000–8,000 a night; book six to eight weeks ahead. Tonk Road and Malviya Nagar are closest to the venue; C-Scheme and MI Road are more central for sightseeing. Traffic around the venue slows to a crawl in the late afternoon.
Crowds, food and practicalities
Security checks can take 20–30 minutes at peak times. The food court is pricey and crowded at lunch, so eat early or step out. Signings with famous authors mean long queues; join straight after the session ends.
What to wear and photography
January mornings in Jaipur start near 8°C and afternoons reach about 22°C, so wear layers, carry a shawl and choose comfortable shoes for walking between venues. Photography is allowed in most sessions without flash; ask before photographing speakers off stage.
Combining it
Spend the mornings at Amer Fort, City Palace and Nahargarh, then add Ranthambore, Pushkar or Udaipur. See where to stay in Jaipur, things to do in Jaipur, the best time to visit Jaipur and our January ideas.
