Definition

Your record of previous international trips, shown through old passports, visa stickers and entry stamps. For Indian applicants, a clean travel history, with visas used and rules followed, is one of the strongest factors in Schengen, UK and US visa decisions.

Why travel history matters

Visa officers try to judge whether you will return home. Past trips where you went, followed the rules and came back are hard evidence. A first-time applicant asking for a 25-day Europe trip has less to show than someone with three Southeast Asian holidays and a used UK visa.

How Indians usually build one

  1. Start with easier destinations: Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bali, Vietnam, Dubai or Singapore. Several are visa-free, visa on arrival or e-visa.
  2. Move to stricter visas: Schengen, UK, Japan, Australia.
  3. Use the visas you get: an unused visa does not count, and repeated unused visas can raise questions.

Example

A Nagpur teacher with no previous trips wants a 15-day Europe tour in May. Her file is sound, with a stable job, ITRs and a leave letter, but she takes a short Singapore and Malaysia trip in December first. When she applies for a Schengen visa in March, the used Singapore visa and stamps show she travels and returns. After two used Schengen visas, the cascade can bring her longer multiple-entry visas.

Practical advice

  • Keep every old passport, even cancelled ones, and submit copies of relevant visas and stamps.
  • Never hide a previous refusal. Most forms ask, and countries share data.
  • Don't overstay, even by a day. It stays on your record.
  • Under the EU's Entry/Exit System, Schengen trips are recorded electronically instead of with stamps, but your visa stickers still count.
