Definition

An EU rule for Indian nationals that steps up Schengen visa validity. After two Schengen visas obtained and lawfully used within three years, you can get a two-year multiple-entry visa, normally followed by a five-year one.

How the cascade works

Since April 2024, the EU has applied a specific cascade to Indian nationals applying in India:

  1. First visas are usually valid only for your trip dates, sometimes with a few days' margin.
  2. After two Schengen visas obtained and lawfully used in the previous three years, you can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for two years.
  3. After the two-year visa, you will normally get a five-year multiple-entry visa, if your passport has enough validity left.

While the visa is valid, you can travel to any Schengen country as often as you like, as long as you stay within 90 days in any 180.

An example

A Pune couple visits Switzerland in 2024 and Italy in 2025, entering and leaving on time both trips. When they apply to France in 2026, the consulate can issue a two-year multiple-entry visa. That covers a Christmas trip to Vienna and a summer one to Spain without another visa appointment.

What to watch

  • Lawfully used means you actually travelled and didn't overstay. A visa you never used does not count.
  • The cascade is guidance, not a guarantee. Consulates can still issue a shorter visa.
  • A visa cannot run beyond your passport's validity. If your passport expires within two to three years, renew it before applying so you don't waste the step-up.
  • Each trip still needs a genuine purpose. Carry hotel bookings, insurance and proof of funds, because border officers can ask.

Our visa assistance service can tell you where you stand on the cascade before you apply.
