Definition
The escort who travels with a group tour from start to finish, usually from India, handling hotel check-ins, coaches, meals, timings and problems along the way. A tour manager is different from a local guide, who explains one city or site.
What a tour manager does
On a 12-day Europe fixed departure, the tour manager usually meets the group at the departure airport in India. From then on, they handle group check-in, brief everyone on the day ahead, hand out room keys, arrange Indian dinners, keep the coach on schedule and deal with problems such as a lost passport, a sick traveller or a missed connection. Many speak Hindi plus another Indian language.
Tour manager or local guide?
| Tour manager | Local guide | |
|---|---|---|
| Time with the group | Whole trip | A few hours |
| Main job | Logistics and care | Explaining the sights |
| Licensed to guide at monuments | Usually not | Yes, where required |
At many major European sites, guided tours inside are led by licensed local guides, so the tour manager hands over at the entrance.
Tipping
Group tours from India usually either include tips or collect a fixed amount per person per day for the tour manager, driver and local guides. On Europe tours, around €3–5 per person per day is a common figure at the time of review. Check whether tips are already in the price so you don't pay twice.
What to ask before booking
- Does the tour manager travel from India, or join at the destination?
- How many travellers are there per tour manager?
- Which languages do they speak?
- Are optional tours sold on the road, and can you skip them without pressure?
Company groups often need an escort on every coach. See MICE.
