Definition
Dates on which a deal, voucher, package price, card benefit or award redemption doesn't apply, usually around Christmas–New Year, Diwali, long weekends and local holidays. Check them before you count on a discount or a free night.
Where blackout dates appear
- Hotel vouchers and package deals: "valid till 31 March, except 20 December to 5 January".
- Credit-card and loyalty benefits: free hotel nights and award flights often exclude peak dates or offer very few seats.
- Holiday memberships and timeshares: peak weeks may need more points or a lottery.
- Package prices: a Goa "from ₹10,000" price rarely applies over New Year.
Holidays abroad that act like blackouts
It's not only Indian festivals. Prices jump and rooms vanish around local holidays too:
| Destination | Local peak to check |
|---|---|
| Thailand | Songkran, 13–15 April |
| Japan | Golden Week, late April to early May |
| Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam | Lunar New Year, January–February |
| Europe | Easter week, and Christmas market weekends in December |
Compulsory gala dinners
On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, many resorts in Goa, Thailand, Bali and the Maldives add a compulsory gala dinner supplement per person. It ranges from a few thousand rupees in Goa to several hundred US dollars in the Maldives, and it's often not in the room price you see first.
An example
A Bengaluru couple plans to use a credit-card voucher for three free nights at a Goa resort over 27–30 December. The voucher's terms list 20 December to 5 January as blackout dates. They can move the trip to mid-January or pay full peak rates plus the gala dinner.
Tips
- Ask for blackout dates and compulsory supplements in writing with any quote.
- Read voucher and membership terms before planning a trip around them.
- Use vouchers in shoulder season, when they're easiest to redeem.
