Definition
A villa built on stilts over a lagoon, usually with a deck and steps straight into the water. They're the signature room type in the Maldives and typically cost noticeably more than a beach villa at the same resort.
Why Indian honeymooners pick them
The Maldives is a short flight from Kochi and Bengaluru and about four hours from Delhi, which makes it the easiest place for Indian couples to try an overwater villa. Elsewhere, you'd be flying to Bora Bora, Fiji or a handful of resorts in Malaysia.
A 3-night Maldives trip with flights starts at about ₹70,000 per person, twin sharing, in a beach villa or island guesthouse. An overwater villa often costs 30–60% more per night than a beach villa at the same resort, and can take the same trip well past ₹1 lakh per person once meal plans and transfers are added.
Split stays
Many couples book two nights in a beach villa and two in a water villa. They get beach access and shade first, then the over-water nights, for less than four nights on the water.
What brochures don't say
- Children: decks and ladders open straight into deep water. Some resorts don't allow young children in water villas; others require supervision. Families with toddlers are often happier in a beach villa.
- Distance: villas at the end of long jetties can be a 5–10 minute walk or buggy ride from restaurants.
- Snorkelling: not every water villa sits over a good house reef; some lagoons are shallow sand. Ask if snorkelling matters to you.
- Weather: May to October brings the southwest monsoon, with more rain and rougher seas, though prices drop.
- Sunrise or sunset side: sunset-facing villas usually cost more.
Transfers matter as much as the room. A seaplane is scenic but often USD 500–900 per adult return, so ask our hotel booking desk to compare resorts reachable by speedboat. Maldives options are on our tour packages page.
