Quick answer
Holi in Braj is a week-long season, not a single day. Barsana's Lathmar Holi comes about five days before Holi, the flower Holi at Vrindavan's Banke Bihari temple on Rangbhari Ekadashi, and the main colour day on Holi itself, around 22 March in 2027. Stay in Vrindavan, book six to eight weeks ahead and expect dense, boisterous crowds.
Highlights
- Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, where women chase men with sticks
- Laddoo Holi at Barsana's Radha Rani temple
- Flower and gulal Holi at Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan
- Holika Dahan bonfires on the eve of Holi
- Huranga at the Dauji temple in Baldeo the day after Holi
What actually happens in Braj
Braj, the country around Mathura where Krishna grew up, celebrates Holi for about a week, and each event belongs to a particular village or temple. The sequence usually runs like this:
- Laddoo Holi at the Radha Rani temple in Barsana, the day before Lathmar Holi.
- Lathmar Holi in Barsana: men from Nandgaon arrive with shields and the women of Barsana beat them with long sticks. The next day the roles move to Nandgaon.
- Rangbhari Ekadashi at Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, with flowers and gulal thrown over the crowd.
- Holika Dahan bonfires on the full-moon evening.
- Holi itself, with colour everywhere, and the riotous Huranga at Baldeo the day after.
The exact dates follow the lunar calendar. In 2027 Holi falls around 22 March, which puts Barsana's Lathmar Holi in the middle of the month; confirm the dates with UP Tourism or your hotel in January.
Where to stay and how early to book
Vrindavan is the best base: Banke Bihari and ISKCON are walkable, and Barsana is about 45 km away. Hotels that charge ₹2,500–5,000 normally ask ₹6,000–12,000 in Holi week. Book six to eight weeks ahead. Mathura has more rooms and Agra, 60 km away, is a fallback. Delhi to Vrindavan is about three hours by the Yamuna Expressway.
Crowds and safety
Be honest with yourself about crowds. Barsana's lanes and the Banke Bihari temple become crushes, colour is thrown hard, and groping is reported every year. Women should go in a group, ideally with a local guide or male companions, and avoid the narrowest lanes. Children and older travellers are best kept to rooftops. Bhang thandai is offered freely; it is stronger than it tastes.
Photography and what to wear
Rooftops above Barsana's main square give the safest view; hosts typically charge ₹500–2,000 for access. Put your camera in a rain cover or a sealed plastic bag, and keep your phone in a zip-lock pouch. Wear old, full-sleeved cotton clothes you can throw away, sunglasses and closed shoes. Oil your skin and hair beforehand so the colour washes out.
