North India Travel Guide

North India holds the country's most recognisable images — the Taj Mahal at dawn, snow on the Pir Panjal, aarti on the Ganga at Varanasi, the Golden Temple lit at night — and they are close enough together to combine into one trip.

North India holds the country's most recognisable images — the Taj Mahal at dawn, snow on the Pir Panjal, aarti on the Ganga at Varanasi, the Golden Temple lit at night — and they are close enough together to combine into one trip.

Why travellers choose North India

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur remains the single best introduction to India, and it can be done comfortably in five nights.

The Himalayan states of Himachal, Uttarakhand, Kashmir and Ladakh sit within a night's train or a short flight from Delhi, so mountains and monuments combine easily.

The pilgrimage circuits — Char Dham, Vaishno Devi, Varanasi, Amritsar and Haridwar — are all in this region, and we run them with darshan logistics handled.

What not to miss in North India

  • Taj Mahal, Agra — Best at sunrise, and closed on Fridays — a detail that catches out a surprising number of visitors.
  • Jaipur — Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and the City Palace in India's most photogenic planned city.
  • Varanasi — Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and a boat at first light.
  • Amritsar — The Golden Temple, the langar and the Wagah border ceremony.
  • Kashmir — Dal Lake houseboats, Gulmarg's gondola and the meadows of Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
  • Rishikesh and Haridwar — Ganga aarti, rafting and the gateway to the Char Dham.

When to travel

October to March is the comfortable window across the plains, with December and January cold and often foggy in Delhi and Agra. The hill states reverse this — April to June is their season, while Kashmir and Ladakh are at their best from May to September. The monsoon from July to September is best avoided in the mountains for landslide risk.

Entry and paperwork

No visa is required for Indian citizens. Inner Line Permits apply for parts of Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh and are arranged by us where needed. Kashmir and Ladakh itineraries occasionally require identity documentation at checkpoints, and we brief you accordingly.

North India — frequently asked questions

What is the best first trip to North India?
The Golden Triangle over five to six nights. It covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur without long drives and gives an excellent sense of the region.
When should I visit Kashmir?
April and May for tulips and blossom, June to August for the meadows at their greenest, and December to February for snow in Gulmarg.
Is Char Dham suitable for elderly pilgrims?
With helicopter support and palki arrangements, frequently yes. We assess mobility honestly first and often suggest Do Dham instead.
