Quick answer

For a Santorini honeymoon with caldera views, stay in Imerovigli or Oia; Imerovigli is quieter and slightly cheaper, Oia has the famous sunset but heavy crowds. Firostefani and Fira offer views with easier access to buses, restaurants and the ferry port. Families and budget travellers do better in Kamari or Perissa, on black-sand beaches without the caldera premium.

The best areas to stay in Greece

Oia

₹₹₹

Best for: Honeymooners, sunset views, luxury

The postcard village of blue domes and cave suites, with the island's most famous sunset from your terrace.

Sunset crowds swamp the lanes, steps are everywhere, and it's about 40 minutes from the port and the beaches.

Doubles from ₹30,000 (€290) for a caldera view in May or October a night

Imerovigli

₹₹₹

Best for: Honeymooners who want quiet, the best caldera views

The highest point on the caldera rim, facing Skaros Rock, with sunset views and far fewer day visitors than Oia.

Few restaurants and shops, many steps, and you need a bus or taxi for Fira's nightlife.

Doubles from ₹26,000 (€250) for a caldera view in May or October a night

Firostefani

₹₹

Best for: Couples who want views and walkability

Caldera views for less than Oia or Imerovigli, and a 10–15 minute walk to Fira along the rim.

Smaller rooms and fewer services than the bigger villages.

Doubles from ₹18,500 (€180) for a caldera view in May or October a night

Fira

₹₹

Best for: First-timers on a budget, nightlife, transport

The island's main town and bus hub, with the most restaurants, shops and nightlife, plus caldera-view rooms at mid-range prices.

Crowded when cruise ships call, noisy at night, and view rooms still command a premium.

Doubles from ₹12,000 (€115), non-view a night

Kamari

₹

Best for: Families, beach holidays, value

A black-sand beach with a long, flat promenade of restaurants and shallow water, 15–20 minutes from Fira.

No caldera views, and the dark sand gets very hot in summer.

Doubles from ₹8,500 (€85) a night

Perissa and Perivolos

₹

Best for: Budget travellers, groups, long beaches

The island's longest beach, with beach bars, water sports and the cheapest rooms on Santorini.

Furthest from Oia, about 45 minutes by road, and no caldera views.

Doubles from ₹7,500 (€75) a night

₹ budget · ₹₹ mid-range · ₹₹₹ premium. Nightly rates are starting prices for a double room outside peak dates.

Which village should you stay in on Santorini?

The choice comes down to one question: do you want a caldera view from your room? If yes, stay on the western rim — Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani or Fira — and pay the premium. If you'd rather spend on experiences, stay on the eastern beaches at Kamari or Perissa and travel to the caldera for sunsets.

Oia or Imerovigli for a honeymoon?

  • Oia has the most famous sunset and the iconic blue domes, but thousands of visitors fill its lanes every evening in summer.
  • Imerovigli has equal or better views — it's the highest point on the rim — with far fewer crowds, at a slightly lower price.

Most couples we plan for are happier in Imerovigli, walking or taking a taxi to Oia once for the sunset.

Fira and Firostefani for value

Fira is the bus hub and has the most restaurants, so it's the practical choice for first-timers on a mid-range budget. Firostefani, ten minutes' walk away, is quieter with caldera views for less.

What should Indian travellers know about Santorini hotels?

  • Steps: caldera hotels are built into the cliff, often with 50–150 steps down to the room and no lift. This matters for parents and heavy suitcases; ask about porter service.
  • Cave rooms can be dim and cool; ask for a terrace.
  • Season: most hotels open from April to October. July–August rates can be double those of May or October.
  • Climate fee: Greece charges a per-room nightly fee, higher in summer and for higher star ratings.

For Athens, stay in Plaka or Koukaki, both walkable to the Acropolis. On Mykonos, choose Mykonos Town for walkability or Ornos for a quieter beach base.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oia or Imerovigli better for a honeymoon?
Imerovigli suits most honeymooners better. It has caldera views as good as Oia's, from the highest point on the rim, with far fewer crowds and slightly lower prices. Oia is the right choice if the famous blue-dome sunset from your own terrace is the priority and you don't mind evening crowds.
Where should families stay in Santorini?
Kamari or Perissa. Both have flat promenades, shallow black-sand beaches, family-sized rooms and lower prices, and neither involves the steep steps of caldera hotels. Plan one evening trip to Oia or Imerovigli for the sunset, by bus or taxi.
How much does a caldera-view hotel in Santorini cost?
In May or October, caldera-view rooms start around €180 a night in Firostefani, €250 in Imerovigli and €290 in Oia. In July and August, expect roughly double, and plunge-pool suites can cost €600–1,000 or more a night. Book four to six months ahead for summer.
