The country runs north to south with distinctly different characters at each end — Hanoi's old quarter and northern mountains, Hoi An and Da Nang in the centre, and Ho Chi Minh City's energy and the Mekong Delta in the south.

• Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge — A cable car to a hilltop complex above Da Nang, with the much-photographed hand-held bridge.
• Mekong Delta — Floating markets, coconut-candy workshops and sampan rides through narrow canals.
• Hanoi Old Quarter — Street food, the Train Street, Hoan Kiem Lake and a water-puppet show.

When to travel

Vietnam is long enough that the country never has one single season. Broadly, November to April suits the south, February to May and September to November suit the centre, and October to April suits the north — though northern winters are genuinely cold. For a full north-to-south route, March to April and September to October give the best overall balance.

Entry and paperwork

Indian passport holders require an e-visa, applied for online in advance with processing typically taking three to five working days. Passports need six months' validity and one blank page. The e-visa specifies your entry point, so we confirm it against your flight before applying.
